I do think a lot of Germany tows with 3 series. Most of my searches generally end with someone recommending getting something shipped from Europe.

Holy shit that YouTube video on the last link is AMAZING.
The only problem with that system is some of these camper rentals say you need a 2" receiver for a custom hitch supplied with the trailer.

Its gonna be hard to find a 2" receiver hitch for something that isnt officially rated to tow much anything bigger than a garbage can.
Might be worth contacting these guys - https://torkliftcentral.com/coming-soon - they're sort of local to you and that's who I bought my hitch from for the TDI wagon. They had a 2" hitch option when I ordered.

Yeah, I've kinda accepted that I'll need to limit to ball mounts. I need to do some more digging on rentals and see what local options are for unbraked, ball mount trailers.

the curved-dong euro ball hitches should do it. 2" ball size and they mate to a 1-1/4 ClassII receiver. just figure out what rise you need.

yeah - we got the 2" hitch for Alissa's GSW. It's pretty big for the vehicle, but we did have a 2" bike rack before and we have the 2" 1up single now.

Well, after a bunch of research and indecision I finally said fuck it and rented a camper van for a week. This way we can figure out if this camping style is meant for us without having to rush to get a hitch (permanently) installed in the next week. If this works out and it looks like my job keeps me in the US for a few more years, I'll be looking at hitches again.

As opposed to a couch/kitchen setup, I mean.

Seems like the seats are meant to... (wait for it)... Take more passengers.

I like how the one person without kids can't fathom why you need more than two seats.
Anyway, yeah... turns out traveling with a car seat is a pain in the ass. RVs are not generally safe because of a lack of appropriate attachment points and a regular two person camper van doesn't have back seats. Your choices are tow something or get a stacked bed arrangement like this. There was another that had two reclining captains chairs and a kitchen setup in the back, but the comms with the owner was shady.
Ideally it would have been a single seat and not a bench, but whatever. We can try this out and see what we like and don't like. All the kitchen gear is included with the rental, so that's a plus. We have all our own, but it's super nice to only really have to worry about sleeping bags and food.
Oh, I also rented their hitch bike rack so I can take my ebike with us for the week. I figure if nothing else, we can tool around the campgrounds.

So this is why we ended up in a 2016+ Thor 28Z as they are one of the only manufacturers with the proper attachment points and forward facing seats for kid seats.
I was shocked when I went RV hunting how unsafe it was to take kids and how no RV manufacturer seemed to care.

The mini fridge doubles as a child seat!
Whats wrong with using the belts to secure the kid seat? They are rated for more weight than the anchors, and the new Britax seats that the base folds out to sandwich the belt are really sturdy.
Chris how much was the RV rental per day? We are thinking of doing something similar next year.
