Body of frames are generally considered to be significantly stronger than unibody's. For hauling people around, no big deal, for an enclosed, you want as much safety margin as possible.  It's not only weight, but the ability to control the enclosed.  The quick example is jack one corner of a unibody SUV and and do the same to a body on frame and see which flexes more.

Just because some do it, doesn't make it right.

Durango is a little too gangster for you, IMO

Keep it German, or go with a truck. My vote stands at either the ML (smart) or Raptor (cool)

I DID NOT BUY ANYTHING YET. Feel like I should say that before someone just looks at the pics.

I test drove a 2013 GL450 today and asked for an "extended test drive." Salesman said sure, I drove to the trailer lot and gave it a whirl. I have a Tekonsha Prodigy RF brake controller on the trailer tongue, so the trailer brakes function even if the tow vehicle doesn't have a controller installed.

The Mercedes did really well with the trailer. Air suspension keeps any squat at bay, it handled curves and 70 mph down the highway both with ease. Mirrors are small. It'd be the easiest thing to drive and park in the city. I'm still not sure I like it enough to want to spend $25k+ and maintenance/insurance on it, though. It is very good, but it's more or less a German Tahoe with four-corner air suspension. Frankly I'm not jazzed about buying a new-to-me vehicle that isn't a 911 or F-Type or Mustang so part of me feels like having something too pimpy is pointless. I think my 2001 X5 has a better driving position and steering feel than this GL.

Drove a 2015 Ram 1500 Sport yesterday and looked at its twin - one red, one gray. Drove the red one with no air ride (but coil springs, no 2013+ Ram 1500 has leafs). It rode really well. Seating position was good, it's a truck, UConnect seemed fine, I dunno. Not bad, looks good. Gray one was in better shape and had the air ride so you could raise and lower it. Neat. Not sure how much I care about that particular feature.

I really don't know why, but I keep going back to the idea of a sub-$20k Titan. Haven't driven any yet.

Can y'all tell I'm just extremely blasé about this entire process?

Look into the cost to repair the Benz air ride if it goes. We had one at MAM when I worked there and the rear passenger corner was leaking and for whatever reason they did not want to fix it.

Arnott makes replacement parts for it, just like the Rovers. About $400 a corner.

I just don't think I can really get into the idea of dailying a GL.

If you’re not keen on getting a bougie tow pig, then why not explore the logistics of having two cars. Why exactly can’t you have two?

Sounds like you’ll be meh with any tow car you get, so might as well get something that gets the job done. Then get your fun/fancy car for the other days, win win.

You don't feel great about this because your expectations are too high. There is no solution that is fun to drive without the trailer and also great with the trailer. Just get the best 2011 F150 or Tundra you can find on the cheap, leave it at my house, and find an affordable fun daily.

I'm even mildly annoyed with moving around a third car in a SFH in a cul de sac. If you don't have the space I can't imagine trying to fit an additional vehicle.

I'd lean toward a nice, comfy, dependable daily that could tow what you need well. With Jake's ability to get a press car it makes things less desireable to get a nice expensive second car unless you can write it off as a business expense while reviewing it.

Yeah, the best day in recent car memory was when my E46 M3 went away and I turned around to only see one street-registered car of my own. I'm doing really well with only keeping up with maintenance, insurance, registration, etc on one vehicle.

Talked it out a bit more last night and I think the Ram is the best idea. It'll be new and nice enough, do the job I need well, and not cost too much. The Titans are a bit dour for a daily.

If I keep up the press car hustle, I'll get a few mildly-fun cars thrown my way and that'll satisfy the urge. Only having reserved/safe parking for one car means the other gets kicked to the street or lives in Taylor's culdesac, neither of which are viable long-term options, especially if a press car also arrives.

Ford should be following up with a turn-in date and financials soon - got a call on Friday that it's "in progress" - so I guess I'm looking for a blue/red/burgundy 2015+ Ram 1500 Sport.

Having one car sucks if it's not under warranty. What do you do when you have to work on it? Can't take your only car out of commission.

Really? I thought that is why you guys live in Nova/DC. Walk/scooter/bike/metro/uber to work. Sucks for those of us who live in the suburbs, but we find a way to get to work anyway.
