So I've been drinking fewer beers and more cocktails lately. For me, there's some joy in the ritual of making a cocktail, knowing how to use the tools, what things should taste like, etc. I've also been exploring various Scotches and Bourbons (Graduation presents from beloved friends and family) and I think the art of Good Spirits is kind of lost in the haze of "cocktails aren't manly" and "check out this Sour Quadruple Hopped EIEIOPA from this craft brewery that totally isn't my cousin's college roommate's basement."

So this is your thread for cocktails, whisk(e)y, and related conversation.



It's also national tequila day soooooooo....

"Gimme one San Jose Plumber" sounds like something I could say at a bar or a swinger's party and be met with equal parts confusion and enthusiasm. For what, I do not know.

San Jose Plumber:
In a shaker add:

60ml Anejo Tequila
30ml Parts Pickle Juice
Lime wedges

Shake until you can't hold shaker anymore 
Strain into chilled martini glass rimmed with cricket salt. 3-4 jalapeno rounds for garnish.

Of course that means you'll pay $10-15 for each, but whatevs.

Good cocktails are amazing.

I've been using a lot of Amaro's lately. Manhattan is my go-to.

I've been a fan of these recently. It's a very summery drink even though it has jager and doesn't really seem like it would be. Typically served in a opaque tiki glass of some sort since it's a brownish color.

Tiki Trauma

1 shot of jager
1 shot of malibu
2 oz of orange juice
2 oz of pineapple juice

Notes:
You can add a little more or less juice to taste.
Whalers is a cheaper version of malibu that tastes pretty much exactly the same.

Funny this gets posted today. My brother is moving to Canada and isn't allowed to take various things with him, one of which is liquor. So my mom and I went to Chicago over the weekend and picked up his guns, plants...and all his liquor, much of which is liquors. Now that I have a good assortment of liquors, mixers, and droppers full of bitters, sweeteners, etc, I'm going to start trying to figure out some cocktails. I'll take note of all the recipes here and give them a shot.

As for my preference, I can't turn down a good old fashioned.

i'll get down with Whiskey Sours all day, or Gin & Tonic in the heat.

what do you guys think about scotch ales? had a chance to try some lately and i don't know all the particulars about the brewing but they taste awesome and a couple in a row will knock me on my ass.

Its the sweet (malibu) on sweet (juice) on sweet (juice).

A good cocktail doesnt have more than 3 or maybe 4 ingredients.  And making sure that one ingredient doesnt dominate the conversation.  And they should balance each other - i.e. spirit/sweet/bitter.  And for gods sake no flavored spirits. 

Look at how many of the 'classic' cocktails well, and you'll see what I mean.

The bitter to balance out the sweetness comes from the citric acid in the juices.

Like I said, it's a weird drink on paper. But it's actually a surprisingly good and refreshing summer cocktail.

I can't refuse a good Old Fashioned. The best (bougiest) one I've had recently was from the Ritz Carlton. It came out on a wood plate with a dome of smoke. It was awesome and $24 (company tab). And then the next night they had a bartender making only these for 3 hours. It was awesome.

A good gin and tonic is hard to turn down as well. Usually stick with Hendricks, but there is a small distillery out of DC - Green Hat - that makes a very good gin. More earthy than Hendricks.

First person to say "mixology" in this thread gets punched in the dick.

For me, good tequila with a dash of lime juice. Or just good tequila.

But overall Ive gone the other way, I used to love cocktails, but now 99% I just want to sip on some good cider.

I often order crafted cocktails out, but when drinking at home is pretty much always one of these.

vodka + olive juice
whiskey + vermouth + bitters
rye + simple syrup + bitters
scotch + ice cube (size of a grape)

There is a surprising variety in flavors in Gin.

My current favorite is a japanese joint, Nikka.  About once a year I'll make an order from the whisky exchange in the UK.

Some are less juniper forward than others.... but if you didnt like that stuff from sound spirits then you wont like any of 'em.  That's fine, I hate vodka and olives.
