I was going to suggest the same thing.

I can't find what the CPU is on that thing, but it could be that it's just being overwhelmed by trying to handle the traffic from those devices. An annoying option is to try adding devices one by one and test speeds as you go.

so after some digging over at DSLReports.com I found a thread re 5g signal and the garbage encountered with the router in general. Fios has acknoledged the issue a month ago, and is working with the manufacturer to remedy the issue....

Looks like if I want good Wifi I need to disable wifi on the VZ router and use a secondary router for wifi. So, given the size of the house, and being 2 stories a mesh network seems to be my best bet. May just snag the Google Wifi cause fanboi, and it appears to be the simplest/cheapest option.

Nighthawk or die. Number of stories doesn't matter I get strong signal across the cul de sac. I don't even bother to hardwire my work laptop, I'm getting over 250 down and up a floor away from the router, which is stuck in a closet in the first floor due to our low voltage hub being there

The Google WiFi routers are actually pretty robust, solid option.

Yea.....I think I found my problem....the VZ router just couldn't handle the # of devices.



Ran to Best Buy and picked up the Google WiFi setup last night. It is the cheapest option for a mesh network.

The UI for the Google WiFi is pretty simple and cool. The wife and I can easily trouble shoot connection problems. Way better than logging into the crap UI VZ has for their router. The easy to use Parental controls should come in handy. Being able to prioritize devices is nice.

I can also easily see what's connected and trolling bandwidth in real time.

So far my only complaint is I lost IP control of the TV in the living room through my Harmony Hub.

Since it is one SSID but two bands, the devices bounce between 2.4 and 5 depending on strength of signal. The hub only does 2.4, and the TV is sticking with 5. Because of them not being on the same band, the IP function wouldn't work.

No biggie as I have the Hubs IR blaster out controlling the sound bar anyway, so I just told the hub to control the TV via IR as well.

A+, would recommend.

That's weird, with my router that is 2.4/5 I have options of connecting to either band. There is no switching automatically. I can also disable one band or the other if I'd like to. There are no options like that?

There has to be a setting in there somewhere to differentiate.

I use 2 distinct SSIDs to avoid this. Why the f would you want things to choose at random?

What the fak. Got to be an option somewhere in the router or a way to change that via some old school command line or bash. That's pretty big oversight. Call Google support maybe?

Yea I wouldn't want Google WiFi for that reason alone. Just because the very last thing I setup specifically said that it doesn't work with 5g and having both channels carrying the same ssid will ensure you have a bad time.

I also have the Verizon FiOS router and the only thing I'm concerned with is if I get to the point where I need to add another router, from my understanding it's kind of a pain in the ass because the FiOS TV boxes get their guide information from the router so I'm not sure you can disable the WiFi but maybe they pull it through the coax. Not sure. I'd have to do more research when and if that time comes. But it's time for my monthly call to Verizon to try and get my bill straightened out anyways so maybe I won't have FiOS much longer anyways

I don't see the need for a 2.4 and a 5 SSID, 99% of the time your device will choose the 2.4 because it's stronger, but not faster. It won't switch unless a signal is completely lost.

With this, Google witchcraft keeps you on the strongest fastest connection without the need to switch manually between SSIDs on your device.

Yea I did that at my dad's cause the Xfinity router was shit and they push that public WiFi bullshit but do you know if the FiOS cable box gets it's internet from the wifi or the coax

Basically, the router is needed to interpret the signal from the FiOS cable to send guide and remote DVR capabilities to the boxes via coax.

If you only have FiOS internet the VZ router isn't needed, but if you have TV and Phone, you must use their router as the primary.

This struck me as a little odd, and as it turns out, just so I can learn something... this was the issue right? What you're trying to support is what would have been considered a small/medium sized business just a few years ago, but from a basic home router, with no experienced IT guy to set it up.
I cannot even think of 27 Internet things. And my router supports two households.

2 Kindle Fires
2 Kindle Paperwhites
2 Phones
3 Laptops
1 DVD Player
1 Smart TV
1 Playstation 4
3 Smart Speakers

That's 15 without even really trying.

Im getting 100/100 everywhere in the house, and I was barely getting 5/2 on a good day standing 2ft from the router.

Same # of devices connected.

You did well, standard wireless routers from the ISPs are almost always trash. The one we got from our fios provider was actually pretty good but the X4S absolutely destroys it, and you really nice it when gaming
