"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

i've been driving almost nonstop since 8:30. got the 11 sheets of baltic birch from Atlanta and hauled them back on the trailer narrowly avoiding some massive storms and people who i'm 99% sure are on bath salts
trailer got bumper-punched in the ass by some guy in a truck who couldn't see it. mostly cosmetic, will have to hammer some stuff. 2 beers in now, i can only laugh.
current lifetime tally:
hit 5 times
every hit was while i was parked or sitting stopped
4 times were in atlanta
i hate this city so much
pics later

threaded through downtown with white knuckles in mad-max traffic and got it loaded and covered just before the sky opened. so much sweat.
this was the sweetness i was trying to get a hold of for like the last 2 months. looks like regular old plywood but its super thin and will bend nicely for the roof curves. really pretty stuff, just a total PITA to find.
mah brothas hooked me up (Randall Bros in downtown ATL)
i had my son with me (not ideal but he's a good traveller) because of the holiday break in summer camp and we had to find a place to eat pronto or he was going to melt down. went to a place i knew had decent food but it was slammed even at 2pm. made it in OK, parked OK, but on the way out we got this souvenier:
got hit by one of these, he pulled up behind me as we tried to leave the parking lot and didn't see the trailer over the front of the hood. hit the trailer frame square with the little point on the chrome part of the bumper, dead center.
he actually got it worse than i did, but he really didn't care about the truck and was pretty apologetic. that's just how it goes in atlanta, its chaos all the time. the impact was pretty light, just pushed the xterra a little and didn't damage anything else like the hitch pin or ball hitch. unfortunately i was on a tight schedule because i had to pick up my wife 2.5 hrs away (its her car and she can't drive mine with the manual) so we just decided to not get anything involved, traded info just in case and move on. could have been way worse if he was lifted or was moving faster than an idle crawl.
i think i can fix it with just a couple ratchet straps and a hard point, similar to using a come-along. if not i'll just unbolt it and try to sledge it back into shape. ulitimately as long as its kinda straight, its fine....it'll be covered by the trailer body and its only job is to locate the last 12 or so inches of frame siderail and support the structure above. again, could have been much worse.

Need to attach one of these flags to it. Helmet optional, but sounds like maybe a good idea in ATL.

so i'm staring at this bent crossmember trying to figure out what to do. tried wailing on it with a sledge, nothing, just made loud noises. as i'm hammering away, wife pulls in the driveway and i had an epiphany, i know what will bend this back. i told her to stop, laid out 2 small scraps of plywood and bridged the middle with the crossmember, bent part sticking up. she's looking at me like an idiot. but i wave her forward, she stops the xterra's front tire on top of the crossmember, and then backed back off again.
BAM! straight as an arrow again  brute force rules.
the hit did throw the frame a bit out of square so i did get to apply my sledge skills to a corner to persuade it to budge 1/4" back in one direction and line stuff up again. the frame will never be perfect now but its 99% lined up and that's fine, its not like this thing is going into outer space.
had a yard sale:
this is all my heavy crap sitting on top of the deck frame that was just glued to the plywood under-layer that will face the frame/road once the deck is bolted on. it cured up great with Titebond II wood glue, stuff is serious business.
tomorrow the overlapping plywood edges get routed straight, holes countersunk in the deck to allow for the frame bolts, and then the flooring applied!

got us a floor, and its even got a window for our butts
look ma, no wheels. these "landing gear" swing-down feet not only help level the trailer but give us a super steady platform for sleeping vs. the wobbly tongue wheel. i also don't like that the tongue wheel is offset to one side of the tongue which torques the chassis torsionally. the feet will help the trailer always remain level at rest and well supported to ensure the structure is never torqued hard for long periods of time (although the wheel will be down just touching in the event the foot slips and collapses). i had to add some 1x3 pine scrap to make a spacer between the gear and frame mounting point to allow the gear to fold all the way up securely. $20 for the pair on amazon, woot
the deck rests flat on the frame despite the crossmember bolts sticking out the top of the frame rails
and here's why: we used a Forstner bit to cut a 3/4" hole to clear the bolt and washer. these are so much better and more precise than paddle bits. the deck is not achored by anything right now, those bolts will be located in a different place to hold the deck to the frame and countersunk as well, from the other side
this hard styrofoam is somewhere around a 3.5-4 R rating and fills the 3/4" gaps in between the deck beams perfectly. cheap stuff from Lowes ftw
next up: finish insulation, building the 8" deep "smuggler's hide" storage box to go in the floor hole and then flipping the deck back over and coating the bottom with "asphalt emulsion" aka roofing tar to permanently weatherproof it and protect from stone impacts. then the oak flooring goes on top and its all bolted down to the frame. can't turn back now!

Coming right along and it looks awesome! The landing gear are definitely a good add. The guys next to us at hyperfest left their camper hitched to the truck and never bothered to put down the jacks on the camper. That bitch was wobbling harder than a JMU sorority girl on a Saturday night. Looked sketchy.

ha, yeah you can certainly keep it hitched but i don't like feeling like i'm on a waterbed! in any case we'll be unhitched from this all the time during camping so we can take the vehicle out for daily fishing/hiking trips in the local area.
