That's what good friends do is at least make the offer, it's up to him whether he wants to take you up on that or not. If I invite our neighbors over for dinner it's usually a big grocery bill but I'm not going to ask them to chip in. If they want to bring some wine / booze (I don't drink anymore so I don't keep alcohol around) or dessert or something that's up to them!
