Thank you! This is insightful. I'll never be a really hard core camper, but I want Hannah to learn to enjoy it. Rex and I were just talking today about keeping our outdoorsy kid, an outdoorsy kid, so though I've never camped much as an adult, I intend to do it, and try to do it right, so she'll enjoy it. If Momma is in over her head and upset, it doesn't make for a fun memory. Luckily for her, her Dad is also gonna be camping with her, so if I fail, at least he can create good memories!

I bought a no-name $40 tent off Amazon a few years back; it worked great for the 2x I have used it (and yes, it did rain.) If I was going back woods camping for days on end I would pony up for something better, but for infield camping in a non flood plain, no need so far.

I think I had the knife conversation with Rex in the gun thread. It seemed more appropriate here, so that's where I'm posting it. Anyway, I have a birthday coming up so I put this thing on my wish list and BAM... it showed up at my house today. I wanted something that could be used to baton wood and the color... well... I actually love how hideous it is. The colors a bit more neon green that the photo suggests. There is zero percent chance of dropping this thing in the grass and having a hard time finding it. Car key for scale.

that's super hot, i def have a chubber for ESEE stuff. i love the color actually - that screams "function" to me, you'll never lose it like you said. nice sheath too.

flat grind should be very reliable for you over time, and easy to resharpen. i'm on the fence between a flat or scandi for my next knife.

They arrived today and I am pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price! Plenty bright, single LED diode but has bright, low and strobe mode. One of the flashlights won't unscrew to put batteries in it so I emailed the seller and will see if I can get them to send me another one, otherwise I'll return it. It's no $bling Streamlight or anything but like I said for the price I could essentially throw these away no worries if they break down the line.

Anyone out there have kids and take extra steps for childcare providers in their lives?

I’m comfortable with what we have at home, but our son is getting to an age where we’re going to start letting our childcare provider (read: nanny) take him places in her vehicle. Aside from the basic stuff like making sure her car is good working order and the car seat is installed correctly, what other steps have you taken? I’m particularly interested in how much planning you do in case of something like an earthquake. I can see a scenario where we're all in different neighborhoods and you can't travel from one to the next because all the bridges are fucked. Do you communicate a basic itinerary ahead of time, plan a rally point, use an “off-grid” communication like GoTenna?

ensure they are CPR certified. this is usually part of a nanny's resume so you might be all over that already. small med kit.

once they know your child well enough i'm sure you can have a diaper bag stocked up but it might be wise to include a cheap power supply like an Anker or something, assuming cell towers don't go down. itinerary and rally point makes sense but the rally point is as good as worthless if the roads are borked with gridlock and she can't carry an infant long distance or if the weather's jacked. i guess plan on the itinerary for a day's worth of sustenance and clothing and assume the rally point would be a bonus.

might be worth giving them access to a mace gun for light protection from dogs or crazies but if they don't have steady nerves under duress i don't want to know what it would do to an infant's vision long-term if some of the shot blew back in its face.

We keep a battery and adapters in our diaper bag, but I'm thinking there's some work to do on emergency provisions. I carry hand warmers and an emergency blanket in my work bag and in the trunks of our cars (plus first aid), so why wouldn't I do the same for our nanny's car? At the least we should keep warm clothes and some food provisions for him, should they need to shelter in place. Sounds like I'm putting together an emergency kit for her car...

Any recommendations for long term food and water stores (ie reputable sites with good options)? I found a site called The Ready Store a while back that I keep getting coupons for but I dont know if their stuff is any good. Been having that thought in the back of my head that we should probably stockpile at least 6mo worth of food and water here in case the Hillaridiots and Berntards decide to continue their armed crusade against govt officials and things start to destabilize

Bonus points if the source has GF options as the wife has Celiacs

Still rocking the ESEE-6 on trips outside the city. I haven't used it much more than a camp knife, but it's been pretty awesome at that. We recently took the kid camping and I made the mistake of trying to cook with charcoal. Toddlers do not have the patience for charcoal. So, I batoned a bunch of wood into small kindling and used the charcoal as a base for a small higher temp wood fire. Having graham crackers around helped also. It's a shame I don't get to use it more, but I'm hoping it'll still be around when my kid is old enough to start to show him how to use it. The thing is built really solid, so I'm sure it'll last forever as long as it gets cleaned and tuf-clothed. A+ WOULD RECOMMEND
