The Zombie Preparedness Thread

Ok, so, a zombie outbreak in the future is pretty much a given. Read this to find out a few ways a zombie outbreak could be a very real possibilty.

How would you survive? To help, read this link. Also, Justin pointed me towards this informative quiz on your survival skills.

Alright, so, lets discuss possible means to survive this eventual outbreak; this way, we can all learn something that'll inevitably aid in our survival.

First off, lets distinguish our target. This, is a zombie:

The blood-stained face, staggering demeanor, and seemingly senseless need to kill and feed tip us off to its nature.

Personally, I'd locate the nearest Unimog. Comfortable, near-limitless off-road capability, and badass looking.

If that fails, I'd simply raid the county of one snow plow. Unfortunately, this would limit travel to mainly paved roads, but the giant f'ing plow is a bonus as a zombie-pusher as well as getting burnt out, charred vehicles out of your way. Tough call here.

Obviously, food and guns would be the first stop in my newly acquired vehicle. Here is where I'd like your opinion: what weapons would you choose? I was thinking the perfect trio, a scoped rifle of some sort for the rooftop headshots (as the only real way to kill a zombie is to sever the spinal cord/damage the brain to kill what basic motor functions they have), some sort of sidearm preferably of the .45 caliber with hollow points, and a shotgun as a last ditch close-range resort.

After acquiring all the necessary goods for survival, I'd probably make my way to a sparsely populated area like Alaska where natural resources are abundant and the air is clean of whatever air-borne pathogen that possibly started the outbreak. When there, I'd commandeer a boat and live off-shore for a while until I'd be relatively sure that the zombie wave has passed, then I'd scan the radio channels for signs of other survivors.

In my opinion:

Vehicles are a bad idea in the event of a zombie outbreak. Your plow idea is a good one, but they're slow. A zombie could latch on and crawl into the cab, and then you're fbxrd. And I've never even seen a goddamn unimog. If I had to go far, I'd pick a dual sport like ginger's DRZ or a diesel 4WD pickup.

I also think you're on the wrong track with your weapons selection. Assuming zombies do not respond to tissue trauma (and they wouldn't, being zombies) then your hollow points aren't going to do any good. FMJ would be better (in my opinion) for penetrating the skull and destroying the infected brain tissue inside. Neither is a .45 really the best option. In an apocalypse situation your biggest concern is ammunition, and so the best weapon to have is one with common ammunition. This means 9MM (army/natl guard scavenging) or .40S&W (many LE agencies).

I'm also tempted to say that if a zombie is far enough away to shoot with a scoped rifle, it's too far away to be a threat. I would stick with two weapons, a 12 gauge pump action shotgun and a 9mm automatic pistol. The 12 gauge could shoot buckshot for medium range engagements, and slugs for longer ranges. One could keep the magazine loaded with buckshot, and then chamber a rifled slug when it was needed through the breech. Ammunition would be heavier and more bulky, but not as heavy or as bulky as carrying ammunition for two full size firearms AND a second weapon.

Also, a crowbar is a must. A good, quality crowbar. Hell, you ought to have one anyway.

As far as where to go, I mean, you've got that spot on. Where do people live? Go where they ain't.

I'd also think that a small radio would be crucial for survival. Everyone always forgets a radio when they talk about zombies.

Doesn't anyone else have the "Zombie Survival Guide"?

Landmines. Lots and lots of landmines. And napalm. Oh and since he is immune to any known and unknown pathogens, I would locate Chuck Norris and use him as the ultimate weapon against the zombie threat.

vehicle
i'm going to buck the trend here and go super lightweight:

in the event of zombie hoards, i'm peacing the F out on a 2 stroke. my best option, as i see it, is to leave civilization at a rapid pace in a robust, maneuverable, efficient vehicle that allows me to avoid having to stay tied to roads wide enough for vehicles. should i encounter a mass mob, i will simply drive through another route, such as stairs, backyards, alleys, etc. a bike is too quick to catch and too small to latch on to. i'd wear a big backpack to hold some food, gas, and my small weapons. i'd also have on a full suit of the toughest bike armor i could swipe, to protect from bites or scratches.

weaponry

stay light and simple. for me, the three mainstays would be an aluminum baseball bat, crowbar, and a small chainsaw. the bat is portable and light, the crowbar is tougher and heavier but smaller. either can be a weapon or a way to break into a building or vehicle. the chainsaw can use the same fuel as the bike and i will strap it over my back for use in melee situations.

guns are out except for hunting food while in exodus. i don't have time to aim, guns are weight, and they will necessitate me being tied to civilization through ammunition, which itself is heavy, takes up space, and means i have to break into stores/homes to get more which puts me at risk.

should the wife not be bit, she comes too on her own bike. if we have a bike malfunction we can ride 2-up on one bike at decreased weapons capacity.

Can you better describe the threat? Are they run of the mill zombie or do they have super strength, speed, agility. These things are important.

Alaska might be a good idea except that their winters have 20+ hours of dark. I would go to New Mexico. Less pop density, hospitable climate and lots of sunshine year round.

I'm also cutting and pasting what rex said about guns and get those.

Scotty a *chainsaw*?

Seriously?

WTF are you going to do with that.

Plus, I disagree with your two stroke assessment. 4 stroke would be the way to go in a ZA event, as you wouldn't have to worry about carrying around premix. Otherwise, I think a small all-terrain bike is *the* way to go to escape. Small, maneuverable, fuel efficient and off-roadable. Pretty much the perfect apocalypsemobile.

WTF do you think? i'm going to rip up some zombie ass. in the event i EVER have to get close to those bastards, i'm not risking swinging some blades or squeezing off rounds hoping to hit the head/neck. i'm simply going to lunge at anything near me with a conveyor belt of steel teeth spinning at a good couple thousand rpm.

as a bonus, i will be able to procure firewood when i'm up in the hills Big Grin

edit: we're not talking lumberjack style either, just a small saw, something i can strap over my back.

Motorcycles don't make sense. They provide no protection from the zombies themselves. If anything else, the auto's cab will provide you with a few last minutes to say goodbye to your loved ones before you get your eyeballs eaten out.

true but the idea behind the bike is to just plain GTFO. you won't be wading through crouds of zombies because you can just go around them, since you aren't tied to roads. also any 4 wheeled vehicle is succeptible to zombies clinging on and probably bad fuel milage.

Poor zombie scotty, tried to go toe-to-toe with the zombie horde armed with a chainsaw.

We're going to miss the cheeky bastard.

Edit: Also, titanium crowbar:

you know it would be awesome.

however, i would intend to avoid all hordes. the most i'd ever try to deal with at one time would be maybe 2-3, like if i raided a building. otherwise i'm bugging out on the bike.

so is the consensus here that if you had to wade through a croud of zombies, the only real option is a bigass truck or explosives?

For about 15 seconds, you would indeed be the King of Awesome.

But really, if your plan is "Avoid zombies to stay alive" it's a good plan...and if you're close enough to chainsaw a zombie it means you FUCKED UP YOUR PLAN. Smile

LOL

come on though, can we agree i could take at least 1-2 slow-ass Sean-of-The-Dead zombies at close range? i'm going straight for the neck.

my bike idea works except for teh 2 stroke which means i have to go to civilization from time to time for gas/oil, which is when i feel i'd encounter these small groups of zombies.

if we're talking about crazy 28-days-later zombies, then yeah i might have to find some big guns.
