The new crystal finally showed up last night so I could reassemble the Sportsmatic. Couldn't resist the chance to take an exploded view photo.





Amazing how much smaller a 37mm case looks next to a 38mm, although I think a lot of it is the thicker bezel on the Seiko.

I still can't believe how great that turned out Joey, that new crystal made the watch. Fantastic polishing work too, it looks like new old stock!!

Have you done the Japanese translation for what characters are which day of the week? That would be an awesome talking point if you can remember which one is Monday, Tuesday, etc. :lol:

I had to look up a chart to set it correctly, so I know Thursday and Friday pretty well now. Give me a week and I'll have the rest down.

I really think Joey could start a side-hustle rebuilding / restoring vintage watches like these as he gets better and better and learns how to do more stuff. The market for vintage watches is really hot right now and that's probably not going away any time soon

Rebuild how? I could polish it up for you but I wouldn't trust myself to get near the movement, that's a whole new can of worms.

That watch is actually already at a shop waiting to get its movement serviced, but they are so busy it could take up to 2 months, so I'm waiting for a couple of places in Vienna to open up so I can call them and ask about their turnaround times.

EDIT: After interrogating all of the remaining watch repair places in NOVA via phone about their turnaround times this morning, I ended up picking it up over lunch and delivering it to Alabaster Watch & Clock in Vienna. They quoted me ~$150, can get it within +/- 20 seconds/day, and will have it back to me in 2-3 weeks. Done & done.

I actually like that. But lol at paying $4500 for a watch that comes on a goddamn rubber strap. If/when I ever venture into the 4-figure watch world it better come on a bracelet made out of some precious freakin' metals or a strap made out of endangered whale dick leather.

Yeah I'm not too high on the rubber straps for the high end watches. I know some of the nice watches come with multiple bands in the box but I don't think that's the case here.

Fuck me, I never should've been so specific about that. I like it well enough because it's subtle, still wouldn't be my first choice by a long shot in that price range. Also, if a portion of the dial was dedicated to a ford/shelby logo and the entire thing mimicked the white & blue shelby color scheme, I would not like it. I don't think my tastes are really that finicky or hard to decipher.

Anyway. My co-worker brought in his FIL's Bulova Accutron 214 Spaceview for me to check out today. Super, super cool piece. These were the first electronic watch but they use a unique tuning fork positioned between the those two electromagnetic coils at the top to keep time, instead of ticking like a normal watch they have a high pitched hum. I don't understand how it works really, but it's neat, and it beat the Japanese quartz watch to market by almost a decade.

They weren't supposed to sell them without dials like this, they made a few of them for trade shows to show off the new kind of movement and people liked them so much they ended up putting them into mass production.

That little gift box with the toy model is gangster, and I'm with Joey on the rubber strap for a pricey watch. G is right, a lot of them come with several strap options, or you can buy the rubber strap separately (for like $500...lol)
