"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Hmm... invest in Tesla stock if it drops below 200 today? Spacex explosion has got it dropping. Something to look into getting closer to lunch time.

Something about their stock hovering around 225 for nearly 3 years makes me nervous. Sure, make a few bucks buying at 200 and selling at 225 or so but longer term I think 2017 is due to be rough. And if fuel prices stay low that's bound to hurt the model 3.

I'd be inclined to agree, but they are the golden child, and frankly you guys better fuckin' enjoy these low fuel prices while you can. As soon as King Salman starts to feel the pinch you will too.

My investments are long term based. I don't feel like having the stress of trading daily. This is on their lower end of stock price in a year besides the Feb price of $140. Tesla is the future of tech, it's just a gamble of whether or not it is too early to invest in hopeful future profits. Musk can easily crash and burn as he tries to do everything at once, oh well I lose some money. But if he doesn't destroy the company then the gamble pays off. Luckily I'm young but I'm also not putting a crap ton in the company with no return right now just maybe a few shares. :dunno:

Edit: My plan is to buy a few shares on their lower end of share prices in the last year. So I'll be purchasing now, in 5-6 months and another time in 5-6 months.

Are fuel prices really that big of a deal to this audience? That's an honest question.

Apparently not when it comes to the $80k+ models. But this is supposed to be an everyman car, and myself included yes, it would figure in to a buyer's interest in the car.

Not everyone here lives in an urban area. Driving is the only way to do most things. That takes gas. Gas costs money. The more gas costs, the more money they don't have.

I personally love high gas prices. I realize they trickle down to me some way, but they must put me ahead relative to other people at least a little bit.

I'm aware of the economics of gas prices. What I am asking is details on how it impacts specific individuals. As in, I drive xxx miles to work and $1/gal means I spend $yyy more per month.

Gas prices never really concerned me, even when I was living in Loudoun County, drove everywhere, and was making 1/3 of what I do now. I'm interested to know what the tipping point is.

for me it was when we danced around $5/gallon and my daily was a truck. Having to swipe the card twice because the pumps had a $75 limit was psychological warfare.

I think there is a very small subset of people that let gas prices effect their car buying choices. Prices of gas fluctuate so much I don't see that being a huge factor. With Tesla it is more of a statement piece than about being green. It's the latest and greatest technology, the fact that you can say you own a Tesla, etc. That is very important to a large percentage of the population.

Apparently it was THE most important thing, in 2012:

Maybe your sample size is a bit smaller...

Ehh barely a third cited fuel efficiency as the top factor when they were shopping. Higher than I thought but not very high.

I don't think it's a small subset at all. I think it's a major component of people's psyche in car choices and driving, but I never actually understood why it's weighted so heavily in consumers' minds. I just cared enough to google it, but I'm still interested to hear personal reasons here.
