Why do you guys do in there that's so sacred? Or maybe it's that you can't imagine anything other than a bathroom that requires walking through a bedroom?
That is absolutely untrue  Our current townhome, the one I lived in before this, and quite a lot of the smaller, newer homes we looked at have bathrooms solely for the master bedroom. Like, almost all of them because that is what most people actually want now. It's only older homes for the most part that have detached bathrooms intended for the owner's use.

By "McMansion" I meant pretty much anything built in neat little rows in the past 20 years. Your townhouse counts.
Haha alright, but that is a very "you" definition of McMansion. I don't think I have ever heard someone refer to a townhome or condo as one

I guess the difference is I don't consider a bathroom personal space. I don't want people sleeping in my bedroom, but that's all I really care about.

I always thought of McMansion as the idea of maximizing interior space with rooms you almost never use (you have guests maybe 5% of the time?) and having them all be one of three rotating models in your neighborhood. I think our last townhouse qualified.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. Nah dudes, hesitate to cite Wiki but it does give a pretty good description of what most people think McMansions are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMansion

It's a large, expensive cookie cutter house not a townhouse or condo. There are also a lot of not so new homes that are small but still have master baths connected to the bedroom. It's a new vs. old thing, it's honestly pretty rare at least from what I've seen here on the east coast for a master bedroom to not have its own dedicated bath anymore. Again, because that's what most people want now.

:dunno: Down this way you can have all of that. We will be 3 minutes from Harris Teeter, banking, urgent care, library, schools and one of the best BBQ joints in CLT, 5 minutes from a Publix, walking distance to 4 baseball and 4 soccer fields and a walking trail, gym / rec center and pool for our community (they are building a second pool that I should also be able to walk to), can go on and on. Commercial properties are exploding around that area so it's only going to get better. If you are into smaller homes there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm on board as long as you dont have to drive an hour into charlotte to get to work, but I assume being way outside the city your options are pretty limited there.

WRXtranceformed Wrote:But never having been a "city" person I have never seen the need to be that close to everything and deal with the hassles and extra costs of city living.

I could pull up some $450k condos in the middle of the city here if that would keep you feeling woeful?

In some ways the costs are a lot less, not having a long commute and having all the services you're used to nearby. Of course, you're trading cost for space. Just diff'rent strokes and I'd rather be able to commute by bike. I dont need a room for my watches

I think Charlotte (the city) is pretty nice. Its one of the places that appeals to me as large enough to be an interesting place to live, for cheaper than now, with weather tha isnt any worse.

i'd live there in a heartbeat if i could. good jerb market, great car culture, lakes/mountains to the north and west, good int'l airport. property is still sane money. its a little stale on culture compared to older towns but if you're coming from DC, its not that different.

and this kart track is just north of town:

Not being a city person is easy when you WFH or travel. I was dead set on the 'burbs and spent nearly 10 years of my life in Loudoun County. I thought I loved it, until I realized I never did anything because it was all a 30+ min drive away. Now, we live a vast majority of our way-more-active lives in a 4 mile radius and it's glorious. I'm excited at the prospect of the wife and kid hopping on a bus and being at the art museum, science center, or aquarium 20 minutes later. Also, we can walk to bars and restaurants, so we don't have to worry about being sober enough to drive the kid home.

Yep all of this! And the weather is actually much better imo than northern VA. It stays warmer down here longer and we generally have milder winters. I've been out on the golf course several times on new years day. The bold/underlined point is true and is really the only legitimate "complaint" I've heard from anyone who didn't like living here. If you're looking for a historical city like Boston, this ain't it. But, CLT is super clean (they power wash the streets at night) and there are a lot of cool buroughs and places to explore (Whitewater Center, NoDa, the new/upcoming brew pub district, Lake Norman and Wylie, etc.). Fortune just named the city one of the best new cities for beer lovers, if you are into that sort of thing...local breweries are exploding. We're about 2 hours from Asheville and about 3.5 to Charleston, two of my other two favorite cities. Also one of the fastest growing cities in America so if you are ever looking to move you might want to do it soon. Real estate is still reasonable but it probably won't stay that way for long

Always bro. There's been construction on that part of 77 forever, and traffic is going to get a lot worse. Some foreign company contracted a shady under the table deal with lawmakers that nobody wanted, and they will be widening that highway to make another lane but that is only a paid toll lane. And there was a clause that stated that the road couldn't be widened again for another 50 years. People are pretty furious because commuting back up north to Huntersville from the city already blows. That is the one area of Charlotte I would say if you are not okay with traffic you would not want to be!
