I found out one of my customers at work is an instructor and hardcore track guy, which is awesome. We talked for quite a bit but one thing I found kinda funny is that he talked to me as if he assumed I don't have track experience, even though I told him I track with NASA, raced bikes, etc.
Then that reminded me of the owner of a BMW shop where I took the M, who did kinda the same thing. Nice guy, but he was explaining track days and stuff like I didn't know, when I told him I did track days and raced a bit. And not just for a minute or two, I feel like he talked for 5-10 minutes.
I guess people are so excited that they just go wide fucking open throttle into all of the stuff they like to do and have done without actually hearing you? Or maybe people are just so used to people not knowing anything about driving that they don't know how to handle it when someone does?
Do you guys get that sometimes?

definitely, and its REALLY easy to figure out the hardcore enthusisasts when i get into rallycross talk. they're either like "whoa i've heard of that, i like/don't like dirt driving etc etc" OR "WTF, is that like some kind of playstation Colin McRae thing, and have I rolled my car yet or caught it on fire?" its a good way to figure out how much you need to ease into the conversation sometimes.
i think what you experience has a lot to do with their own past issues in just talking to other Joe Car Guys about "racing", which leads to trying to get those guys to understand what actual track days are for those of us where its typically HPDE/TT/Instructing. most average guys we meet at work that read about fast things in Men's Journal whilst taking a shit and plunk down big car payments for shiny horsepower contraptions have a really blurry/unrealistic idea of what racing or performance driving entails, and after you work around enough of those guys its probably just an automatic safety mechanism to go Full Leeroy right into an in-depth synopsis right off the bat before things get even more confusing. if he didn't know you super well, i could see that happening.
it IS fun though when you finally do cross that line in the conversation and they realize that you actually know your shit. all the sudden the sky opens and the full geek out can commence.

Maybe it's just the people I met or the younger generation but I haven't met anyone like that. They are more interested in me explaining track and such than anything else. Especially the people who are sorta car guys that didn't even know there is a motorsports access that easily like nasa and such. It's kind of comical.
I think it maybe what your experiencing are people who think of what they are going to say without registering what you were saying.

Come to think of it I don't think I've ever randomly met someone who is as into cars as I am. Lots of people share their casual interest or family memories about cars but no one else is wrenching on the weekends just for fun. I am sort of the car-czar in the office though, everyone seeks council with me before letting the dealership do the work. "Yes, your van with 90k on it most likely does need shocks, no they aren't trying to screw you."

For every 1 of you, there are 10 others that claim "oh yeah I have "raced" before or did a local autox or something before while they continue to claim all their hall of fame.
I am actually a really shy person at work/around town so most don't know what I do in my free time. Side effect is that I don't have to deal with it with those guys that proclaim to be car guys and plastidip their cars/slam it to the ground.
Every now and then they will find out something like that I work on cars and then I have to listen for hours about they know some guy or that they themselves do this this and this. Maybe I am just getting old and grumpy but I just don't like to talk about myself to strangers and I really don't give a fuck about how much you think you know (the more they spout typically the less they know).

Maybe this is what it is. I certainly have run into people that claim to have 'raced' when they're talking about a track day. Usually it's second hand though, like, 'My boyfriend races his car at Summit Point'.

Any hobby outside of watching sports and drinking beer is the same thing. "Oh you race bicycles? ARE YOU LIKE LANTZ? HI LANTZY PANTZ!"
Yeah. Fuck off.

I have never had a single person ask me about racing since I moved, despite me talking about it and having obvious memorabilia in my office. Damn hippies.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

The new 2016 Madison Motorsports has a 0-Derailed thread time of less than 4 seconds. A full second quicker than the 2015 model.
The new 2016 model sports a "Plastidip/Autoflex argument" option that replaces the earlier year's "You don't know what 9/10 of a car is" feature.
Ever present is the great MPG rating, coming in at an average 11 Mean People Griping city, and 15 highway.
The new 2016 MM starts at the low, low price of "You overpaid for your POS Miata and I hope you die." They're flying off the lots, so come test drive one today. Financing available!
