Okay that makes more sense. I was like that speed protege barely pulls harder than my 3 then I see they only make 170bhp and I make 180bhp. But my cars weighs slightly more.
What kind of turbo setup did those speed proteges have? Could their engines hold a lot of power stock? I know these 2.0 MZR engines can take a good beating on power.

And blows dem stock turbos like woah.

I loved when these came out - couldn't believe Mazda made a wagon look so cool. Nice buy, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it! Here's to it being a bit more reliable than the e36.

TBH, it was basically a GReddy T25 bolt on kit, slapped on the MP3. It worked, and the engine is pretty solid, but as DJ mentions, the stock turbos aren't very good. Mazda didn't really work very hard on it. Doesn't mean it's bad, but you gotta know what it is, and what it ain't.

Sounds like the good ol' Mazda days

that's because they pretty much didn't, at all. Mazda outsourced the development to Callaway who basically phoned their solution in. they benefit from a proper intercooler and a decent tune but otherwise they're tapped out.
the FS-DE and DET engines are stout if you don't touch them. the bottom ends can't handle much more than 200hp. they were never designed for a turbo. complicating matters is the fact that despite having a sweetass real deal LSD, the stock tranny is also weak and will fold under any kind of real power.
its all good though. awesome chassis and you can fit a lot of other great mazda engines into it.

Lovin the wagon, you can hang with Taylor and I at the back of the pack during cruises with our low hp awesome handling cars lol
Neat little car, glad you found something that works for you. That's why I got turbo van, I needed something that could haul things and people while still making turbo sounds braking all the time.

This thing sounds like VTEC when you hit 5000rpms. It has two ways air can travel into the engine and at 5k flaps move to change the direction of the flow and holy shit its awesome when you hit that. I figured out where all the "power" was hiding.

Yeah!! My Miata has the variable intake as well, it's very satisfying when it switches over
So this girl has been needing valve seals for a while. I've been debating how to go about it mostly cause I didn't want to pay labor and I also didn't want to do it myself lol. Giving myself lots of options there haha. Well Jason Lineberg and I have been talking about the car and he said he'd be able to help me do them on any Sunday that we both have free. So...hopefully some Sunday this month he and I can coordinate and stop the smoking lol. If any of you have seen it you know its kind of ridiculous. I can kill the entire ozone with one cold start alone haha.
On the brighter side I am glad I bought this thing man. It uses a quarter tank of gas to get to summit, barely half to get to VIR, I forget it needs gas when I'm in town and the gas light always comes on. I actually get about 8-9 days on half a tank which is $10. Its fucking awesome. If you're hard on the gas it DRINKS it but keep it to 2500-3k shifts and it knows how to stretch a gallon. It carries any and everything. The sub in the trunk completes the sound system wonderfully, its quiet when the radio is off, steering wheel is very nice and the build quality on the interior is actually really nice for its year, I think. I really wanna say this thing is underrated. The sedan is meh but the hatch definitely beats its alternatives (civic, corolla, etc) by miles.
But of course nothing doesn't have its problems. Especially at 186k miles. I blew out the shocks like a week before vir *face palm* I'm one of those people that don't really like to slow down for things in the road so you know... They started rattling away over all the little bumps. I think sway bar end links or one of those rear suspension pieces also need to be done. Those are all the mechanical things along with the valve seals that would need work.
My fog lights stopped working the other day so I'm gonna see what happened there. Water gets in the car from somewhere when it rains and I gotta figure out where but I probably will never tbh. I want to shampoo the interior. I don't like the smell of it and all the upholstery has seemed to absorb lots of dirt and dust over time. Every time you sit in the seat a puff of dust comes out of the seat. Its a little annoying. Also something that you know....may or may not be done lol. The valve seals are the only thing on priority with this car.
But if anyone ever wondered "were those things any good?" The answer is yes. Yes they were. Its not a fast sports car BY ANY MEANS but it is a gas efficient, pretty well handling, convenient, versatile car that won't steal your soul like a Prius to drive everyday
Wow class is so much fun today I can't even contain myself.

As of 1 minute ago I decided the car needed a name. I hate saying "the mazda" and I hate saying "the protege" so from now on I'll say, "Barry".
