I think Matt was asking how many hours it takes to do the job so he can estimate the cost for a shop to do it. Not when it needs to be done.

Figure $400-800 (I know wildly varies). Typically $800-1200 for the 30k interval service.

I can do those services for less than that. I do need some work this winter...

Shops will probably charge you around 4 hours for it.

I'm going to be doing this shortly if I buy that car tomorrow. I'll let you know how long it takes me on the first time. I'm usually pretty cautious when doing a job for the first time so it might take me a while.

Woof, I looked back at my convos when I was too lazy to take care of my mom's car, seems like my figures were labor only...not including parts. Now I remember why I decided to do them myself.

Plus a valve cover gasket and the Shim Kit from BMW ($4-500 or rent from someone).

You are more than welcome to come over and I can help you do these things while I work on my own cars, or you can simply drop it off and pay me to do them.

The only thing that sucks about valve adjustments is the like 4 hours of bending over. My back was killing me. I think only early S54's were missing the plastic covers for the holes (oil return journals?)...so you have to try pretty hard to drop the shims in a place you can't get to them. It's still a panic moment when you do, though.

I'm pretty sure my MPG is more in the 20 range...just checked, 20.9 per the OBC that hasn't been reset in probably years - but I admittedly don't keep too close of an eye on it. I tracked a couple highway trips years ago, was getting 25-26mpg there.

Right now, the only two cars that interest me are the e46 m3 and a outback xt with a built motor to make it somewhat more reliable. Either way, I'm screwed with both those cars it sounds like. Maybe a super clean e36 m3 but idk if I feel like taking on another one of those.

Do we know this person? I'm not feeling 20k even though it is laguna Seca. Maybe lenguna with cinnamon interior but this one just has black. Looks maintained though. No mention of rod bearings though.

There's a black one on clist for 20k with some expensive wheels which I don't need. Maybe I could talk him down and then sell the wheels to make it more reasonable

That does seem a little steep to me given the mileage and peeling A-pillars but I think they may have made some updates to the 2004s, that might be why they are priced a little higher. Paging DJ.

The map in that CL ad shows him about a block from my house, if you're actually interested in it I'd be happy to go scope it out.

2003.5 is when the big changes were.

And yeah LSB is cool and all, but thats 8k over the price of the one I posted with the same mileage and probably only a few months newer.

If you're spending 20k I would get one with lower mileage. There's plenty around. There is a 2002 Stealth Grey in yorktown with ~50k miles for $22,000 I think. It has a bunch of dinan suspension upgrades and the dinan 3.91 diff.

Edit: Here's that car http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detai ... /overview/

.

2003.5 do command higher prices. But holy cow that is a lot of miles for that price. Welcome to used cars, I dont care that you just threw $10k at the car. People don't appreciate the last little things, and then compare it to cars that are beat up. I wouldnt be surprised if she eventually came down to 15k.

What's the lift availability? I'll pay you to rent time on the lift. Still need to do suspension/brake work on the Audi, been putting it off.

Would a bottom of the market e92 be much more expensive for maintenance? I feel like there would definitely be more I couldn't do with all the computer controlled stuff.

Don't buy a bottom-of-the-market car when you are already worried about expenses. You are insane.

I've seen some seemingly pretty clean ones for around $28-$33 from just a quick search.

How bad is maintenance on those? Comparable to an e46?
