Alex Peery Introduction

Hey guys! I'm Alex, and I'm a new transfer student. Technically, I'm a junior, but it's more like I'm a freshman.

Anyway, my current rides are a 2001 Miata, a 2003 Ford Ranger, a 2014 Mustang, and a 1971 VW Sand Rail project. I'll attach pictures of everything but the Ranger, mostly because who cares enough to take pictures of their 2WD 2.3L Ranger?

I really never intended to keep this car, but since I can't seem to sell it, I might as well drive it.

She's come a long way since then, but this is how she looked when I picked her up.

A little about me; I have always been into cars, and they've always been a big part of my life. My father was a sales manager at International Auto Parts, which was pretty much the only source for new Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia parts on the east coast. He also parted these cars out, and so from the time that I was old enough to stand, I was holding the proverbial light. As soon as I was old enough to reach the clutch, I started driving around the family farm in an old VW bug. Let me tell you, if you've never plowed through a field full of cow crap in a motorized tin can with no windows at 60 in the rain, you're really missing out. Also, the highlight of my life was probably when I got to drive a F430 around for 15 minutes.

I've made a living for the last couple of years selling used cars and car parts. I have connections in pretty much every salvage yard within 200 miles, so if you need a cheap used part, I can probably help you out. I also have a dealer license, so if you need to know wholesale or Manheim value (helpful for negotiating at car lots), I'd be happy to look it up for you. Only downside to this whole business in college is the amount of crap that I have laying around my room. My roommates and I are actually seriously considering starting a junkyard / dealership when we get out of college.

Looking forward, I'd really like to sell the Miata and the Mustang and pick up a C5 Z06 Corvette. Rumor has it that there's a member here who's looking to sell one? (hint hint, I'm interested)

Anyway, I'm excited to be a part of this community, as it seems like a great group of people. I also hope that it's not overly apparent that I've worked my way through half a fifth of Fireball since starting this post.

Have a great night!

-Alex

welcome! i'd say that overall, yeah we're a pretty good group although we like to give each other a lot of shit on the forums. all part of the experience. there's a reason so many of us alumni stick around.

awesome to hear about your parts business. you're one of a few students that were/are in the automotive business realm during their education. i'm jealous, wish i could have pulled that off in school.

sweet stable of cars. DJ's got his Z06 up for grabs in the For Sale section, its quite an animal.

Welcome! I think we chatted briefly at the Kline's get-together a few weeks ago. Maybe.

Sounds like a fun stable - guessing the Mustang was a "buy low, sell high" idea you had? Surprised you can't sell it but may have better luck in the spring.

Hopefully we'll see you out at VIR and/or the College Solo in that Miata, perfect car to toss around an autocross Big Grin

Thanks for the welcome Scotty!

Quote:Guessing the Mustang was a "buy low, sell high" idea you had?

Yeah, and it was a bad call. I paid too much for a car that's not desirable enough. It was the first flip I spent more than $5000 on, and I definitely learned a lot in the process, but I need it gone for some corvette money. If anyone wants a convertible v6 automatic mustang, they can have it for way below what I paid for it. Not that anyone on this forum would want the least exciting mustang made in 2014.

Quote:The Miata needs to make more appearances!

It was losing a stupid amount of coolant. I took it home last week and replaced the water pump flange gasket. Fixed the problem, but now I can't get anyone to go down there and pick it up with me :x

Honestly, it's got so much crap that needs to be done that I'm probably just going to sell it and let the next owner deal with it.

I can definitely find what you need. What model, and what are you looking for? I'd be happy to ship anything you need at cost.

MMR (the Manheim market report) on that Odyssey is $3350, $5000, or $6750 in below average, average, or above average conditions respectively. That's based in national average though, our auctions tend to be a little more expensive.

Way late, but here's the list of things that it needs:

Timing belt and water pump
Wheel bearings
Throwout Bearing, which would mean that I replaced the clutch and flywheel at the same time
Full brake job
Tires
Steering rack (it leaks)
Radiator (also leaks)
Battery

That's just general maintenance stuff / stuff that really should be done but I've been putting it off. Right now it's out of commission because the water pump flange gasket leaks like crazy and it needs a thermostat. Since South View has already warned me twice about working on cars in the parking lot, I'm going to have to have it towed home so that I can work on it just to get it to run long enough to sell. Given the greater-than-most average that I have to good deals on cars, I'd rather just move on to the next project.

I think if you're looking for somewhere to work on something, there's a lot of options between all of us students and AluMMni in Harrisonburg.

Yeah, it's a steep road ahead. Like I said, probably just gonna sell it and move on. I've got my eyes on a C5 Z06 Corvette, and lately, I've gotten it in my head that I need a Lotus Elise. That's a bad idea though.
