So I got a healthy dose of adrenaline, fear, and anger today during a range trip with a friend of mine when some newb jackass was clowning around and swung a LOADED handgun with their FINGER ON THE TRIGGER directly at my head and everyone else standing at their stations. My buddy was at our station firing, I tapped him on the shoulder and we immediately got the heck out of there. After bringing it up to the employees and asking if they planned to have any range marshalls in there, they said they didn't and that they knew who this guy was...like he had done it before.

Any of you guys getting into guns, please make sure you learn the absolute importance of firearm safety for yourself and everyone around you. And report any range safety infractions....the last thing I want is to witness an "uzi girl" scenario in real life. I would also avoid any range that doesn't have marshalls, and in my experience go ahead and avoid any firing range in South Carolina. They seem to not give a damn about the danger of people who have no experience with guns being around others with a loaded firearm.

So as long we talk about carrying guns, lets talk about belts. For years I've concealed carried with a leather American Eagle belt and it has done great, and continues to do great for ccw. I've used it for work some and it works fine with just the pistol but when you get all the gear on it the belt starts to sag pretty bad. I have some 5.11 and Propper 'tactical' belts but I don't really care for them. Anyone have any experience with a good, thick, sturdy leather belt they would recommend? It'll also be used for off duty ccw as well since my American Eagle belt is getting old and flabby.

My everyday belt, Love it. Never tuck my shirt in so not too worried about its "Tacticool" appearance.

Only issues I have run into are the webbing is 1.75in. Works fine on all of my jeans, but some khaki shorts the belt loops are smaller and thus the belt is a tight fit going through the loops, but it still works. Hasn't been an issue with any of my holster clips though.

Have this, but hardly wear it cause I ordered it a size too large. Has a kydex band in it to further stiffen the belt.

Good belt makes a hell of a difference when carrying.

Like Justin, I wear a rigger belt every day, and have for 5 years running.

I have a 5.11 leather belt that's very stiff, and holds up my H&K pretty well but a stiff leather belt is hard to put on/take off and I take 3 shits a day...

What do you have against rigger belts, Thayer?

Eh, I just don't care for them. I've got about 8 sitting in my closet of various quality and stiffness that I've come across over the years, I just don't like the way they look. Maybe I'll give the 5.11 leather belt or a crossbreed leather belt a try.

Picked up a Glock 27 today, .40 caliber. I carry a full size Glock .40 (22) on duty so it just makes sense to carry a smaller version of the same gun off duty. We get plenty of ammo to practice with too so that helps. I still have the PF9, but this will be my 95% of the time weapon. The beveled edge on the end of the barrel makes it easier to reholster in the galco leather iwb holster I bought. Mags are 9 rounds plus 1 in the chamber. We have a range day on Wednesday and I will put some rounds through it then. I still have my Glock 19 that served both ccw duty and bedside duty, but it will become a permanent bedside gun now.

Im shopping for a left handed/ambidextrous rifle. Any recommendations? Left handed AR15s (what few there are) dont seem to review very well.
I recall a pretty neat rifle that came out relatively recently that could switch right to left and also even switch calibers, but I cant remember or find the name.

Sylvia has a left hand AR. We built the lower to be ambi/left hand friendly and bought a Stag complete left hand upper. the only "issue" I would say is that the bolts are different so keep on around and you'll need an ambi charge handle because they ship a standard with the upper.

It shoots pretty well right out of the box. we never had a failure issue but its only got 500 rounds or so through it.

The Tavor SAR is ambidextrous and can switch from 2.23/5.56 to 9MM. It is a bullpup rifle though. Still on my wish list

Interesting, I have a complete lower sitting around doing nothing, so I may give that a shot. Stag had a black friday sale for the left handed upper for 375 but I procrastinated and they sold out. oops.

seems like all the new/next generation battle rifles are coming out designed as ambi.
Bushmaster ACR is another option, but way too much $$. I like that that 556xi is based on a tested design and is closer to a reasonable price.

thats a good cheapie option, put ambi parts on my existing AR-15, and a brass deflector if necessary.

honestly i just dont enjoy shooting a rifle much, so switching to leftie is to see if using my dominant eye will allow me to enjoy it. if still no, then its nice to be out least amount of $$ possible. IF yes, Ill invest in something like a 556xi.

yeah seems like the bullpups are more likely ambi friendly out of the box than other types of rifles. I just cant get over how ugly they are though (IMO). Im not much of a gun lifestyle/hobby guy though, so I shouldnt care but...... ugh
keltec RFB caught my eye, its the least ugly bullpup ive seen and its even forward ejecting. i think its 7.62 too. no idea on street price

Lemme go through your Points one by one:

Lefty AR's are stupid, because (are you ready for this?) the ejection port side doesn't matter. At all. Not even a little bit. Brass either flies over your one shoulder or flies over the other. What having a weird "mirrored" lefty AR does is have some expensive proprietary parts that can only make it more complicated.

Knights SR-15:
This is not a "cheapie" option, but you should do it anyway because it's the best. Ambi everything: charging handle, safety, mag release, bolt release. All of your controls can be equally easily manipulated on either shoulder. You can replicate 99% of the ambi functionality these days with a KAC mag release, an ambi safety, and a BAD lever but you should buy an SR-15 instead, because it's great.

ACR:
Philosophical problems with the ACR aside, this is just as much money as the SR-15, but for less gun. And I'm not yet convinced that Freedom Group knows their asses from holes in the ground when it comes to supporting firearms, so I don't see the ACR program even making it to 2020 without a big military buy from some middle eastern country.

SIG 556XI:
Good option, I love my SIG 556 sbr, and the XI just improves on that platform. Charging handle is not ambi, but switchable left/right, safety and mag release are ambi...i don't know if the bolt release is ambi, but you should be slingshotting the charging handle on that platform anyway. I'd buy one in 300blk if the SBR would run subs with a can. (it won't)

Another note on sig: Someone at SIG one day stood up and said "You know what, fuck the ATF" and proceeded to make a bunch of awesome barely legal shit and I like that. So if nothing else, get the SIG.

SCAR:
Don't forget the scar! Switchable charging handle, ambi safety and mag release. Bolt catch is only one one side, but I slingshot the handle on anything that's not an AR. (LIKE GOD INTENDED)

Tavor:
If you like bullpups, it's great. If you don't, well...you're gonna have a bad time. The tavor is the best bullpup ever, but it still has bullpup problems.

If it were me, I'd be really examining if I needed a "lefty" rifle, or of a "rifle" with an ambi featureset isn't just as good if not better.

You could also do an AK, which is better for lefties anyway... :-p
