2010 BMW 135i
Kind of a wild guess, but is there any chance they just idle poorly when cold? I know S54's do - some people disable the open (or closed, I forget) loop part of cold starts just to get rid of that.

I figure it's a reach on something as mass produced as 135's, but I wouldn't expect it on S54 motor cars either.

Nah, they just have a bunch of stuff that can cause them to idle poorly.

The poof of smoke thing seems to be fairly definitive that I have a leaky injector. It leaks fuel down into the cylinder while the car is off which is why you get the poof of black smoke on start up. With normal injectors it probably wouldn't be quite as big of a deal, but since direct injection uses a lot higher pressure, problems become more apparent.

Easy fix: gut the cats and shoot a big poof of fireball instead of black smoke on start up. Profit.

Or just wait for the cats to build up so much unburnt fuel that they explode. Saves me a lot of work gutting 4 cats

I have actually heard of that happening with leaky injectors on these cars before. I think he let his go for a while after it was throwing codes even.

Remind me to be more affectionate to my VW's injectors. Confusedhock: Mine are mounted to the underside of the intake manifold which is an absolute bitch of a job to remove. Case in point:

I hope yours are easier to access, on the older BMWs they're right on top of the manifold and pretty easy to remove, but they also aren't DI.

It's not much different than pulling the spark plugs which is probably a little more than an hour job if you've never done it before. They're basically right on top of the motor once you remove the engine cover and cowl.

Bout time for some more mods. Put on the Remus quad exhaust and a carbon fiber diffuser last night. Takes the back of these cars from boring-ish and not that sporty to a much more aggressive look. Just need the carbon fiber trunk lip to match now.

I will this weekend, weather permitting. Just had my phone on me and you can't see any detail in the diffuser since it exposes the shot for the bright white of the paint.

Yeah, it does look good - how's it sound?

I can't imagine there's a lot of room for an extra pipe(s?) around to the passenger side. Was it a pain to install?

You're a few mods away from being able to justify the vanity plate "MINI M3"

I'd pass on the carbon fiber lip, unless you're really into the storm trooper look. I think it'll look cleaner without it.

Not a bad install at all. The hardest part was getting the tips lined up correctly. I had to re-adjust them a little bit last night. Basically the pipe that goes to the right just travels along right behind the diffuser and then curves down into the tips. Not the best flowing setup in the world, but the drivers side still has a pipe for each tip so it didn't hurt anything flow wise. Just added an extra one going to the passenger side. It looks way way better in real life.

Sound wise, the note sounds good and is more aggressive. It's slightly louder than my modded stock muffler, but I still want a little more sound. Next exhaust mod will probably be a mid-pipe from the 2011+ 135i's. That gets rid of two of my 4 cats and bumps up the volume a decent amount from what I've read.

Trunk spoiler, not the front lip. I haven't seen a front bumper lip that I like on these yet. The trunk spoiler doesn't show up that well in pictures, but it looks way better in real life.

For or against?

I still haven't decided if I want the carbon fiber one or the body color matched one. Leaning towards the carbon fiber one but I could go either way. I just think it helps fix the stubby looking back end on these cars.

Here's a better example and kind of what I'm shooting for eventually (minus the 2002 badge).
[Image: Rebadge-Debadged-BMW-135i-2002-BIMMERTIMES-2.jpg]

Just had a sort of epiphany as to why these cars don't photograph well. That body line along the side that is visible in that picture isn't in a lot of them and I think what is what makes all the difference. When that line blends into the body, it just makes the car look chunky. They don't really look that way at all in real life and I think it's because that line is easily visible when you're actually looking at the car.

Love the CF diffuser and massively jealous as I have one on my wish list as well. If it is anything like the one I want, it is definitely not cheap.

I'm on the -1 for carbon fiber spoiler. I personally think they cheapen the look of the car, and this is coming from someone with multiple aftermarket CF parts on his car. Body match it IMO, it will look so much cleaner and less boy racer...unless that's the look you're going for.

The one I have is essentially a clone of the BMW performance diffuser modified to have outlets for the quad exhaust. The original BMW one costs around $1400 I think. The one I picked up is from a chinese clone company called JC Sportline. Overall the finish is really nice. There are a few very small flaws in the weave, but I probably couldn't find them if I didn't have the diffuser in hand turning it around and inspecting very closely. The Chinese knock-off diffuser was only 300, so definitely worth it as far as I'm concerned.

$300 definitely worth it for that large of a piece. Cheapest one for the Jag that is decent quality is $650 painted
