Rallycross at the VIR Rally School Course - Sept 7
#21
It seems pretty feasible. There is a place just down 360 in Danville that looks like they buy cars, so we could probably get rid of it there. Ideally someone in the group would have a truck & trailer, but we could also borrow a truck/SUV and rent a trailer, so we don't have to worry about killing it. Tow it down there, beat the shit out of it and drop it off at the scrapper on the way home. It would also save the fuss of registering or insuring it, we'd only have to pay the sales tax.

It's a shame it's VIR and not Summit, that's a long haul from NOVA for a rallycross, but I think it'd be worth it to get to beat on a car like we're on Top Gear for a day.

Question - is it feasible for 5 of us to drive the same car all day?

If Scotty's offer doesn't pan out, that's essentially what I'll be doing (or if I enjoy it enough to make this a recurring thing). What Chan posted is exactly what I'm thinking.

Alas, I'm at least attempting to hit the easy button for once before diving in...

Yeah that might be too many people to co-drive it. Per our FB convo, if we could find some shitbox at a dealership around here already destined for the scrapper, then we might be able to spend less than $500 for something that runs, so the 3 of us might be able to do it without spending much. We'll have to poke around some dealerships this summer and feel them out.

You're gonna have to get a shitbox from a private seller, not a dealer. Dealers in Va have to have cars inspected before sale. No one is gonna pay to have a shitbox repaired and inspected to sell to you for 500 bucks.

Dealers will sell them without passing inspection, you just aren't allowed to test drive it off the lot and you have to tow it home. I've contemplated trying to buy busted X5s from Fairfax BMW and flip them.

+1 plus sales tax and dealership fee at a dealership.

Private seller = no care about sales tax/fees etc. Cash and be done.

Shame I can't participate, will be just getting back from NASA Nationals that week.

someone literally did exactly this with a Mitsu Endeavor at an event last year. it was rolled...all the airbags were hanging out, no side glass  guy just left it in 1st the entire course. did terribly, not the car's fault...but man it was a riot.

edit: look behind my car, there it is.

Given the couple of SUVs that Scotty's posted about running, I emailed the TSCC rally guys to see if Ben's Jeep would be allowed. The whole "lift kit and 33" tires" part is what makes me wonder. But damn, it would be fun.

i'm talking to one of the regulars (runs a legacy with rally tires) who is looking like he might be open to doing co-drives with you guys. he's probably going to be looking for a little donation from drivers to cover the wear on the car and gas though.

i'll let you know what he says, we're still working out details.

from Mike (drives this)

"Yes, having 5 drivers competing would be a lot, but the car has a new engine, new transmission, new axles, and a slew of other parts. I have a policy of letting anyone drive the car to enjoy rallyx.

As for driving style, the car is setup to take a beating, so I don't mind it being driven hard like Kevin Allen would drive, not like Sebastien :-) The big issue is I don't have a tow vehicle, and thus it has to make it home again.

The terms are this: $50 each, and that covers gas and regular wear and tear that you get from rallyx. If, however, one of the drivers causes breakage then they gotta pay to get it fixed and a tow to Raleigh if its not drivable."

I really like that $50 option too haha!! However, lets say there's a car that's overheating and its run 5 - 15 times on a rallyX ...i mean...it'll keep running for the day right? It's not like we're tryna keep it afterwards...i'm also kinda just curious to see what happens when you run a bmw in the red at red line for like half hour hehe
