Project DD moonlighting as trail rig
#1
Hey everyone! I finally figured I'd done enough to my truck to justify a build thread!

I got it in October of 2012 with 123k on it. Completely stock

Not a total trail rig, but as it's my only vehicle, I can only do so much. Plus, being a freshy, I don't have much money Big Grin

I'm not sure how cool it is to post your DD in this section, but oh well.

How she sits as of 4/12/14

Mod List:
diamond plate bed rails
Kenwood double din headunit
650W pioneer amp
10 inch MTX Jackhammer sub
Playstation 2 mounted under rear passenger seat
TRD seatbelt covers
Uniden 520 CB in ashtray location
Wilson 100 5 foot antenna
Magnaflow 18" Muffler
Painted skids
Grey wire mod
Aluminum Husky Toolbox
Plastidipped badges
Diff breather extension
"Blue" gauge lights
Deckplate mod
4xInnovations rock sliders
Ultragauge mounted on windshield
PA speaker mounted in grill
Optima gold top
Bilstein 5100 Adjustable Ride Height fronts
Bilstien 5125 rears
Old Man EMU Dakar Leaves
OME Greasable shackles

How it all started. Little red AKA Consuella!

She met her demise.

How she sat when I got her to replace my wrecked 96 5 lug.

First mod was painting my skid plate and getting better tires. BFG Rugged Terrains. Much better than Rugged Trails.

Added extra badges Big Grin

Got a Husky toolbox and of course I've collected stickers over time. Every Tool I own is in this toolbox, which is almost 99% full. Just about every dollar I've made is in this truck in one way or another.

Repainted my bed rails and my buddy's Celica's interior

Magnaflow 18 inch. Sounds meaner than stock, but nothing that'll turn many heads.

TRD Seatbelt cushions. Got them for free, so I'm not complaining. They didn't fit at first, so I had to cut and sew them.

Toyota reaclled the rear tire carrier recall so while I got that done, I repainted the spare wheel.

Grey wire mod (This allows me to use my Electronic diff locker in 2wd. Done in the R1 lot)

Painted fuel tank skid (Also done in R1)

Kenwood Double din touchscreen head unit (Playing Crazy Taxi on my PS2) (This was done in R1 too... thanks to Ryan and Sam for keeping me from being out there all night)

Pioneer amp and dremel charger ran off an inverter from the cigarette lighter

12 inch Sub

Playstation 2 under the rear seat

Got blue bulbs for my dash, but they didn't turn out blue. Oh well, at least I can see my dash for the first time since I got the truck!

Ultragauge and Uniden CB in the ashtray slot

4 foot fiberglass antenna

Had to make my own bends in the Antenna mount I got since it didn't fit right

Also a PA speaker behind my bumper hooked up to my CB. Inspired by a guy I met at a TacomaWorld meet in Harrisonburg

Sliders from 4xInnovations painted and ready to be welded on

Shoe creek run! Travis did my diff breather mod while we were there, I'll post a pic later!

The run finished off my leaves. They're completely negative now. More reason to work hard to buy my new lift parts!

Upcoming

extended brake lines
dual batteries
aux fuse block
15x8 wheels
33x10.5x15 tires

bravo for tackling the truck while at JMU. i'd personally move the CB antenna and work on cleaning up the interior installs.

A lot of the pick up guys do a folding antenna mount. while its down you can actually communicate on trail and if you have to extend it to get range you can.

I don't have a better place for the antenna as there's nowhere for me to run the cable unless I run it throw a window or door, which I don't like. and can't do a box mount because i have a low profile toolbox.

I plan on moving those wires under the carpet, but I just don't have the time now, plus I don't know if it's permanent. I kind of just did it.

Rebent the mount for my antenna and added a ground to the frame beside the battery. I also recoiled the extra coaxial into a figure 8 shape instead of a circle and that cleared up almost all of the static and my reception is VERY good.

I'm happy with that, but not the holes I've drilled. I've got about 5 extra holes under my hood now and it looks shitty. Any suggestions on filling them?

There are drain plugs filled with rubber grommets throughout the cab. They make good weather proof wire holes by popping a hole through the rubber. Also, at the back of the cab, there is at least one if not two "vents" for releasing pressure mainly when you close a door or something. They are behind your rear seats and would also work to run a cable through one of the slots.

Once it's outside, just mount it on a bed rail or in a stake pocket if the toolbox doesn't use them.

Both of these xEleventy. Most people would wait to work on their stuff until they had a driveway or garage (and whine about it when we gave 'em crap for holding off) but working in JMU parking lots and apartment parking lots is the MM Way

Also, if you plan on keeping everything electronic in the truck, wire it up properly, not with an inverter. I know it might be intimidating but it's not all that hard, and you will have a much cleaner install afterward.

I would, but I don't have stakeholes or a good place to mount it. I honestly like the look of it on the front. I just need to get a better bracket. I already have a better spring coming in the mail.

It's a truck. I don't really care about how clean it is, haha. It's much easier to hide wires in a car. The inverter isn't some kind of permanent solution. Just kind of a part time thing. I don't leave it plugged up.

Thanks!

Upgraded to a Wilson 1000 with a 5 foot whip. Much much much better. I'll tune it tomorrow.

The wind was gusting rather well, hence the antenna bending.

Took off those extra badges on the tailgate.

Also changed my rear diff and T case fluids. We'll see if it drives any different!

Cool Taco! I'm a Jeep guy, so don't tell anyone I said that! Good idea on the sliders. I wheel in the rocks 95% of the time, and they will save your cab. Depending on your wheeling, I'd advise you to get all the skids you can. If you want to get up to GWNF sometime let me know. I don't go there much anymore since my rig is kinda overbuilt for it, but I still like to go every once in a while!

Once I put the lift on, I plan on getting some armor.

I'll paint them red of course Big Grin

Got the parts in the mail to do a diff breather extension, deckplate mod, and another PA speaker in the grill to play music

Tacked up the sliders today! Didn't do serious welding because my uncle's welder wasn't laying good enough beads. I may need to end up paying someone... Oh well.

After that, I came home to a package...

oh yes. I'll be wiring this up to the spare channel on my amp. If anyone knows of a way to have this speaker toggle on and off when I want it to, let me know!

Time to roll around campus being obnoxious. This combined with my CB PA speaker should make i easy.

Second PA is wired up! I have a video on my instagram. It's really clear considering how loud it gets. I can just leave my windows down to let my sub fill out the lows. Big Grin White is for my headunit, the black is connected to my CB. Both are just ziptied in.

Did the deckplate mod today! That's where you take your airbox and cut a hole in it. Then you put a deckplate, which is the thing you use in the bottom of a boat to reach down into the water, in the hole you cut. Seal it and you're good to go! This way, you have a cheap, part time, hot air intake! I can plug up the hole whenever I want by screwing the deckplate back into place! Easy peasy.

Poor man's CAI!

Better airflow with some people claiming HP gains and having Dyno results to back up their claims. I don't care either way, I just like the sound. It feels peppier, but I'm sure it's just a placebo.

Plus, it was something to occupy my today.
