Well, I called. As I knew, I do not qualify for any of the "rebates". That means my price is $34,783. When my boy Nate answered the phone, he started the conversation with "the car is at auction now but we can bring it back". So I ended up telling him that the car is going to get the black book value (anybody have a subscription to tell me what that actually is on this car?) and that I'd give them 31k for it. He's going to "call me back". The search continues.

If the car is at auction, that means they dont want to keep it, which means there is something odd going on. Move on.

On to find that exact car but less sketchy.

Well...maybe, but there are many reasons a good car ends up at auction. Most of the time its actually a matter of interest. Most of these places don't actually own there inventory outright, they finance it. So when they sit around for long periods of time the interest eats up the profit so they will send it down the road to keep the car in the black and make it a deal if just on paper. Another reason is they want a fresh lot. Many dealers will not keep a car past 60 days. 30 days they mark it down big, 60 they wholesale/auction it. Also in the case of specialty and certain new car dealers they will not keep any off brand used car or just certain brands and only to a certain model year. I bought a 2010 Wrangler Rubicon at the sale a month or so ago that had been offered for sale at 3 dealers in the same dealer group in just 2 months (Rosner?). Got it for a great deal and sold it in a week, the selling dealer was their Merc location in NOVA. So yes it can certainly mean there is something wrong, but now-a-days with the high auction prices they can make money wholesale and make it faster than waiting around for retail.
I have a 2012 Explorer I plan to try at the auction. It's a one owner, local car with higher mileage and heavy options. Retail book is $32,500+ but completely unreasonable for our area. I think I can make all the money I could expect to make on it thought the sale right now. Why wait and let it sit on the lot hoping to bank more when I can roll it on and get paid? So keep an open mind and inspect it like you would any other vehicle.

Alright, so I found a 2008 Corvette that I dig. The Car fox reports 0 accidents, and only 2 service records. Would the lack of service records be the reason it rates the car "$1,040 below blue book"? Does anybody actually take that valuation seriously?

What's the mileage? Is it possible to bring the VIN to a dealer and have them look for records? Chances are that's where it was serviced, right?
Also, you can trust Carfax when it says there is an accident, but there's nothing stopping anyone from getting something fixed without reporting it. A good 3rd party inspection is always a good idea, especially by some place with an eye for body work.

It has 35k miles. The current owner picked it up with 2k miles on it in late 2008, a year after the first delivery.

So the first owner either bought it and didn't like it, or couldn't afford the payments, or something along those lines.

After looking at so many of the used 2008-2010 Corvettes, I'm getting the impression that the majority of these cars are bought as second or third vehicles and not kept very long. A lot are probably traded in after a couple of years to upgrade to a newer car or maybe one with more options. I know for a fact that the LS motors are extremely solid, especially the LS3.

Dealer Demo? Was it actually registered for 0-2000 miles? or was the current owner the first real owner?
It was registered for personal use. The first sale was at auction.

So this thread is alive again. The first real step towards a purchase has been made...and it's with Carmax *cringe*. I never really thought I would think about buying from them, but yesterday I saw a beautiful black 09 Corvette with 25k miles on their website at their Laurel, MD store. All the options I am looking for were there (Bose, heated seats, manual, head-up display), and they are asking a pretty fair price for the car (not a great deal, but a good one). Without hesitation, I clicked the button to transfer it to the Virginia Beach store and it should be here next week. Pending any surprises, I should pull the trigger at that point. This may be too convenient to pass on, and I have waited too long.
Anybody want a 2002 Camaro SS with 376 whp and 110k miles on it?

Not like a 'Vette is a more "grown-up" car than the Camaro you already have, but I support the decision 150%.

lol, I see what you mean, but it definitely presents itself better in a business setting than a Camaro no doubt.
