Hell there's no shame in that, getting a factory-like finish out of spray cans takes some serious craftsmanship and patience. After I've sorted all the mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic issues on the E36 (so in the next 10-15 years) I plan on sending it to live with my dad for a few months so we can strip straighten & paint it perfectly.

I thought that sounded good...5 years ago. I wish I hadn't.
Why?

It looks like you held the can too far away and used coats that were too thin.

Here is where all the paint ended up that didn't make it to the wheels. You're supposed to spray the can down toward the wheels bro

Ive painted at least 6 or 7 sets of wheels, usually outside in the grass, sometimes in a dusty carport, and they have always turned out great. The first 2 coats always look grainy and like shit (especially if they are as thin coats as in your pic). 3-4 is when they start looking good, and after the clearcoat is when they pop.
wetsand after the color and before the clear if you want a super high gloss.

Yea I have painted wheels in the exact same manner as i tried to paint these with good results.

Not sure if I just didn't prep em correctly or what. But it doesnt look pretty at all. the faces of the spokes look good but the inner parts of the lip and wheel look like garbage.

And to be honest, after doing the first wheel, I lost motivation. My father in law is always looking for side projects like this between insurance jobs, so I am dropping them off with him this weekend.
where's your father-in-law's shop? i might be in need of some paint work at some point in the near-ish future.
He has a booth at his house, he used to do restoration work on the side prior to injuring himself at work. Doesn't really do much paint work anymore. But he is about an hour SW of Charlottesville.

Mid Atlantic has a guy they use that seems to do good work. Painted a bumper skin for Dan and did a lot of touch up work on one of their tech's 350z.

I had a set of wheels painted/repaired on a Dart. Went from silver to black, cost me $75 a wheel. Place called QuikSilver located in Broadway, he has a mobile unit.

A tack cloth is a marvelous thing!

Turned out 1000000000 times better.

Letting them chill overnight and then gonna throw some clear coat on.
