I thought I did too, then I went to the track and was quite humbled. Street "skillz" never equate to track "skills."

DierwulfBL Wrote:i might buy a GT celica and track it, just cause noone does

Generally if a car is not tracked much there is a reason for it.

DierwulfBL Wrote:im definitely staying away from hatchbacks cause theyre mighty ugly

To each his own, but I think they're one of the best economy cars out there when done right. Can't argue with 2000lbs, and a slew of aftermarket parts and OEM interchangeability.

DierwulfBL Wrote:id be lookin to get atleast 6000 for it, 6500 with the 4age 20v+c52 transmission thats chillin in my basement. I have 10,000 thrown at this car (lots of maintenance stuff too) not including the 3000 the car originally cost, this is why i dont really wanna sell it Sad losin tons of money

Sucks but that's the way it works. If you want to mod something heavily you ought to plan on keeping it for a long time or lube up the anus for the sale. You never get out what you put in, and generally a car is only worth it's bluebook (maybe less) when modded.

I will forever be able to do so. a) they aren't practical, b) they get rocked at the track by cars, c) i don't want to die.

I guarantee you can "scare yourself" again by riding or driving any car on track. I'm not saying you don't have any driving skills (I have not been on track yet either) but you would def reach limits of the car not found on the street if you were to track it. I've ridden in a slow ass VW rabbit on track and it was no Sunday drive...

I am willing to bet a large sum of money you do not know nearly as much as you think you do, and a driver with real experience will hand you your ass at an autocross or track in a much "slower" car.

I am also willing to bet that if you continue this behavior on public roads up you will probably wreck your car, and hurt yourself, and likely take someone down with you as well.

I think its great that you want to participate in Madison Motorsports. But if you do, then you should restrict your "skills" to sanctioned events. We dont want the club getting a bad name or reputation, it could hurt potential relationships with club sponsors.

Before I even venture into this one,

DierwulfBL Wrote:and ive been driving back country roads fast as hell for years now, i know the exact limits of my car in any corner, my car no longer even halfway scares me, ill slide around 20mph corners going 75, i got mad driving skills, and id auto X except if i hit a cone itd crack moldings.

If you think you're good enough not to hit a rooted tree, why aren't you good enough not to hit a 6" cone? oh, the cone won't do anything to your car. It's not a road barrell. People take cars much more expensive than yours out and don't see an inkling of damage.

.RJ Wrote:I am also willing to bet that if you continue this behavior on public roads up you will probably wreck your car, and hurt yourself, and likely take someone down with you as well.

The point of Madison Motorsports is to allow average people, like you and I, to get in a closed area and really test the limits of our cars without being able to damage ourselves, our cars, or anyone else. Please drive safely on public roads. This forum has seen its share of wreck pics, and anyone who's seen a video of a car getting folded around a tree (i have one if you want to see) won't drive 75 around a 20mph turn on public roads. I understand that you might want a thrill, or a "scare," but don't get it where you can endanger yourself or others.

Also, I would STRONGLY advise not getting an R6 until you're in your mid-twenties. Your need for speed will not diminish but your maturity and prudence will grow as you understand the dangers of the road more. I really wouldn't like to see one of our club members in a motorcycle accident.

When participating in motorsports, concern number one is safety. Please come participate in an autoX. I guarantee you'll get thrilled by your car again.

theyre only 6" high?!?!?! im all over some auto cross then, i thought they were those like 2 foot cones, for regular auto X you dont need to go to any driving school do you? you can just go out and drive it.........like no helmet etc. I'm definitely interested in seeing what the celica with untouched 150k mile suspension is capable of hehe, i dont think 6" cones would break even the front moldings on my car. Ill definitely keep my eyes open for some upcoming auto x events, i plan on goin to watch the one in staunton, prolly catch the next auto x after that, this sundays is no good for me

Yes you need a helmet but there are club loaners available, and SCCA usually has a few loaner helmets as well.

The cones are usually 12" high and wont do anything to your car except leave a mark and thats only if you hit them really hard. I've certainly hit enough of them.

no matter what kind of skillz you think you have, they will dissapear quickly when you really find your cars limits. I have mad street skillz as well, and can control just about any situation I've been able to put my car into on the street, but I was definitely humbled last weekend at VIR. Although, I must say that I humbled a lot of cars as well. My lightly modded NA with an awesome suspension destroyed a lot of cars worth a lot more money and having a lot more work done. If you truly know the limits of your car as it is, get some suspension installed in it, and make those limits go even further Smile. Instead of just coming to the autoX in Staunton, sign up and do it. It's cheap, you get some real deal track time, you don't have to take any classes, and you don't have to worry about your car getting owned unless you REALLY screw up (like aim it at a wall). Besides, its in staunton; if the car breaks, at least it will only be 30 minutes away, instead of 2 hours.
In terms of selling a modded car, don't even think you're going to get back what you put in. I have yet to sell my other supra 6 months later, regardless of the fact that there is ~$14k in the car, and there are only about 10 driveable 1JZ supras on the east coast (probably not even that many). I'm trying to get 7k for it, and that just ain't happening.
In terms of what to get, honda reliablility is always there, so I'm a huge fan of them. If you can find something that appeals to you in that class, and you can handle any kind of repair costs (preludes are probably the more expensive ones to repair BTW) then go for it. Other choices are 1G DSMs (b00st rot), 240sx (RWD is the best evar), or perhaps a VR-4 Galant (boosted, 4 door, AWD).
See your ass in line to get into the autoX action in Staunton Big Grin

i dont even want to reply... to most of it...

i've owned 4 bikes in my life... the R6 being one of them... its a great bike, but not rider friendly at all... if you make a mistake, and you might... we all might... then it will make you pay. i've been off and on bikes since i was about 5... get yourself a used honda cbr F2 and learn how to ride responcibly!

not to continue beating an already dead and now mauled horse, but yeah...i'm a good driver, and i take alot of pride in my car-control skills, which frankly aren't even that amazing or anything...

about a year ago i thought i had street skills. wanted to "scare" myself. put car in ditch. never-ending feeling of stupidity and self-lament followed.

what i can tell you for sure is that an autocross will open your eyes (like it did for me), and after a few of those try a track event. then you will realize just how over-rated straight line speed is and how important the driver can be.

And i definitely want a car thats quick in a straight line along with corners. My friend has a SI non-vtec h23 prelude and it was damn fast in straight lines and corners. I don't plan on tracking all that much i just need something that i can scare myself with again, im way too comfortable driving my celica fast. Or i might buy a GT celica and track it, just cause noone does, im definitely staying away from hatchbacks and crxs cause theyre mighty ugly, if i wasnt worried about looks id just go for a 1g AWD DSM, cause theyre hella hella fast and look like ass. I dunno, just gotta get a good price for the celica, id be lookin to get atleast 6000 for it, 6500 with the 4age 20v+c52 transmission thats chillin in my basement. If i can afford an r6 though without selling my car ill just do that :-D sooner or later everyone cant ignore the power to weight ratio of bikes Smile oh well, all show no go for now haha, but even with no go i beat NA eclipse/probes, NA mr2s, d16&d16z6 civics, d15&d16z6 del sols, hang with si crx beat dx crx. This is mostly cause people cant shift like i can :-D learning to race on a 50hp 1987 subaru gl hatchback makes you learn how to shift real real real fast, but ive already worn out one set of shift linkage cables Sad second set is holding up but it cost 600 to replace them. Dah well time for some class, im out, peace
