Looks nice goodspeed. Makes me want another miata (I have bought and sold 3, so maybe I should learn from this and not do that).

PSHH Its a miata, its not quite 100% of a car................. Just kidding. Im definitely very keenly interested in renting a spec miata and see how it is "on the other side" of the fence. Its been a while since ive driven one.

The lot at Bowie sucks. Just a warning. The lot at Blue Crabs does not suck, is probably equidistant, and you get 8 runs and lunch.

2012 Update: Trolled Edition [Image: troll.gif]

So I stored the Miata away for the "winter" Thanksgiving weekend aaaand...we didn't have a winter. Not until now at least, when I decided to dig it back out :x . Oh well, life goes on. But first, some insight.

I was pretty conflicted about where I wanted to go with Project 10AE. Go full on trak kar? Build it for an ax class and nothing else? Or turbo it and have a fast street car? In the end I decided not to do any of those things exclusively. I was probably most drawn to option 3 if for no other reason than 250whp in 2300lbs is amaaazing.

Seriously, turbo Miatas are really fun cars, and I reached a point where I had every intention of doing that this year, but I'll hold off for now. The idea really intrigues me and I'd like to do it at some point in the future, but its a lot of $$$ and work to build a good, reliable car. Then I realized I was mulling a bunch of options that involved spending money and putting off driving. I realized I only drove this thing 1800 miles last year with little to nothing in the way of fun & events, I just spent money on it and let it sit in the garage. Then I looked back at why I bought this car in the first place

Goodspeed Wrote:I'm hoping to take this car to auto-x events and eventually into some sort of DE track program.

Like a ray of light, wisdom hath bestowed itself upon me. Time to get crackin'. But there are a few things left I wanted to do, like:

Racing Beat 4-1 header

The factory '99-'00 exhaust manifold is an egregious offense to humanity, and the worst header Mazda ever put on the Miata. Its a heavy, restrictive, cast-iron lump that generally blows, so that has to go. This RB piece is gorgeous. Benefits are mostly weight and throttle response related; I'm not expecting 20 horsepowers but I'll be glad to see the craptastic stock piece hit the dumpster.

The offending stocker

Behind the header will be Flyin' Miata's catted mid-pipe, and the Mazda sport muffler I nabbed from Maeng's Miata reverse-build sale-a-thon

This piece has me hurrr-facin' hard. FM's "Butterfly Brace". Its composed of frame rail reinforcements, and a x-brace to tie the box of the trans tunnel together. Owners widely report a rock solid improvement that dampens a lot of the structural drawbacks inherent in a convertible, including the Miata's infamous 65-mph shimmy. Basically makes your car feel better than new, with basically no drawbacks. Going on sometime after exhaust stuff.

Finally, a second take on brakes. Centric "E-coated" premium rotors and Carbotech XP10/XP8 pads front/rear. Basically the serious standard for Miatas on stock brakes these days. It'll be nice to have some real stopping power under foot

And that should do it for the Miata for a while. I'm working on the exhaust now, having to think up creative ways to get to the stock manifold/downpipe joint but *crosses fingers* things have been fairly smooth so far. Then it'll be time to drive and drive some more

wow that header is art

but shit man I didnt even use XP10s on my racecar. Thats a ton of brake for a street car. I doubt you will even get them up to temp.

I'll be writhing around under the car trying to make more exhaust progress . I won't make every event but I def. have some NASA-X, CDC, and HPDE stuff on the calendar.

I was a bit skeptical myself but after speaking to Emilio@949 (and reading tons of threads) these seem to be the ticket for a full-weight NB with my rolling setup. Plenty of people pulling dual-purpose on the street/track with these pads - just have to watch the first few stops. I'm OK with that, I always wanted to try this setup so I went for it.

The dust won't be great, but these are ceramic kevlar. The dust is apparently much less destructive than carbon-metallic. Whatever the truth is, I'm a wash-whore so I'm sure I'll stay on top of it.

Yeah, they recommended 8s for me with street tires and 1000 more pounds. They are just fine for the street (dusty, but washes off easy) and hauled the car down at Summit from a pretty good pace into T1.

BTW, I like where you're going. I had to make the same decision, fun street car with some track friendly improvements it was.

Are you surprised that the guys selling pads recommend the more expensive compounds?
I won most of my races in the braking zones and I used XP8s. Thats a race car on race tires going a shit ton faster than any street car.
Its your money so Im not going to bring it up again, but youre pissing your money away on XP10s both in pads and worn rotors, and they dont even modulate as well as the 8s

Hell, I tracked my 94 street car for several years, with axxis ultimates, back to back sessions with a codriver and often with a student in the right seat. its a miata. blocks of wood in the calipers will stop it.

Looks like the new owners of carbotech discontinuted the Panther+. What a stupid move by them, that was THE best pad for multi use.
