Summer tires and winter
#1
So....looks like winter has arrived early this year

This'll be my first winter owning "extreme performance" summer tires - Toyo R1R, 140AA. I have the stock wheels and S. Drives with which I'll park the car for the winter. The question I'm trying to have answered is exactly when is it a good idea to move the 140 tires inside so they don't turn to shit. No one I've asked seems to have a concrete answer.

This is what Toyo says:

So, it seems like anything 15F or under and they'll be physically damaged. So....its ok to say, drive a couple more times on them before storing around thanksgiving/start of December? What I've read is that they'll generally suck/border on dangerous under 40F, but I'm more worried about physically damaging the rubber.

What say you?

Tire temp doesnt matter until it gets down to 15 degrees. BUT you can do significant damage to a summer/race tire by driving it hard immediately after its below around ~40 degrees. Its just like freezing something and then hitting it with high heat, tends to crack the rubber and ruin its chemical properties.

I think youll be perfectly fine with your driving to work as long as your not trying to autox every road. Storing the car in the garage should solve 99% of it though dude.

Never thought about this before. I'm on tires with the same TW. I plan on driving my miata this winter, but definitely not when its 15*F out. Provided I just let it sit and don't touch it when it does get super cold out I should be okay right?

I hear that. The car will eventually be on the stock wheels/Yokos for storage, up on race ramps and under a cover probably. But there are one or two more ax'es I may do, plus I'd like to drive it every now and then...I don't want to put my toy away yet goddammit!

Most people move these, and stickier race tires, inside for the winter/really cold temps to preserve the rubber.

Im confused, why up on race ramps? And for the extra confusion, why under a cover when you have a garage? Mine will be going up on 4 jack stands, but thats cause its getting major overhaul

I mean wheel cribs

Rounded top so they don't flat spot. They also make "Flatstoppers", but I could use those higher ones for other situations than storing. And the cover, why not? Takes two seconds, keeps 3-4 months of dust off, maybe helps critters stay out, might help mitigating door bumps, etc etc.

This is basically how I stored it last winter, worked great.
