Whaddup?! I'm Nathan
#1
Hey MM'ers, I am Nathan.
I am a Freshman here at JMU, and I major in Biology.
I have never done any autocross or racing events before, but hopefully I can change that! I don't have a car, but if my dreams came true, I'd be riding around in a Ford Mustang GT 500.

Hey Nathan, welcome to MM! Interest is all you need -- you'll definitely get tons of rides and involvement no matter what. Any idea what you'd buy with a college-friendly budget?

Hope to see you out this weekend with the College Autocross stuff!

I've never met you. I will probably never meet you.

BUT you are my new favorite member. You don't drive a BMW and you like a proper car.

With my budget, I'm probably better off stealing a car...... but back home I saw a F-150 for 2grand. There was also a Dodge Intrepid that I wanted to look at, but never got around to it.

We can find you a Mustang of some sort for two grand. Don't buy an Intrepid :finger:

seriously, can probably find a 5.0 fox body for around 2k, or find a SN-95 GT for like 4k.

If you need any help with looking over any cars when your ready just post up. We will be more than willing to help, an American Iron car (mustangs/camaros) was on my short list when I bought the race car.

hey Nathan, welcome and don't settle for a boring cheap car when we can help you find an awesome cheap car (that may or may not blow up). seriously though, lots of cheap speed out there if you like mustangs. we were all broke as a joke at some point in college so there's lots of knowledge here for that.

To expand on Scotty's post... take a look around at what's popular in the motorsport world. It's usually for good reasons. Mustangs, Camaros, E30/E36 BMWs, and Miatas are all popular at the track, hold up well and are relatively cheap/easy to fix. And if stuff does go 'splodey on you, someone will probably know how to fix it, have tools, help you out, etc.

Seriously though, you can find a nice old school five liter Mustang for $4k. Don't settle for something boring.

You can get a hell of a deal on a foxbody in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area. Go to the nearest gas station and buy a little newspaper looking thing called "The Valley Trader".

Wow, thanks for all the tips guys! I'm pretty excited to blow off my HW and look around for a 'Stang! I definitely won't buy this year, though. I have two jobs lined up back home, so I figure I'll work those during vacations and the summer to save up a good lot of cash. That, and I can imagine insurance is going to bend me over the table and screw me.

@JustinG -- I can drive stick, or should I say, I've had a little bit of practice. I'd definitely be looking for something with an auto tranny.
@Goodspeed -- YES! I am super excited about this weekend. I will be there!

Also, if a Mustang doesn't work out, my second choice reasonable car would be a retired police car

Definitely wait and save up some cash. Don't look for an auto... you'll find people who will let you practice a bit on their cars (if nobody else will, I'll do it) and once you get good at a manual, you won't want an automatic in any sort of 'fun' car again.

You're already settling with a Crown Vic, stick with the Mustang.
