if you thought there was ever going to be a sporty lightweigt rwd coupe for $13k then I have a bridge to sell you.

Uh, I never thought that. But If you ask me, this is a FAIL. 25k? for this? And I'm not buying the faster, more spacious, larger aftermarket WRX because....?
I'd be surprised if it starts at $25k but if it does I'd agree that it won't be very successful.

Quote:Here's another reason why it's a fail:

4 years? 4 years from rumor to this, when they didn't have to do any drivetrain development? C'mon. It's bullshit. Carroll Shelby could have designed, prototyped, and built this car in 3 months. In a cave. With a box of scraps!
First of all, what existing platform did this car come from? It's not like they chopped 2 doors off an IS250 and called it a day. Also, Carrol Shelby is a dickhead.

Secondly, car development cycles actually take several years from concept to product. 3 to 4 years is about the average, and that's assuming a project hasn't been delayed or put on hold for some reason (like for instance, because of a global financial meltdown). The reason all-new models of cars only come once ever 4-6 years or more is because it take several years to develop a car, and several years to recoup the costs of developing a car. You can shortcut this a bit for boutique, small-volume stuff but those cars end up costing more or giving up features, refinement, performance, etc.

I see what you're saying but they were mighty specific about the dimensions... and they were quite close to the "final" specs 4 years ago. You're right in that it takes some time to come to Market, but normally we don't really get wind of this stuff until like 2 years in. I bet MM could knock together a "concept car" in less than a year.

G.Irish Wrote:Also, Carrol Shelby is a dickhead.

Well, yeah. Doesn't mean I'm wrong. Colin Chapman could have done this in his sleep. We act like auto design is some kind of fucking sorcery, but with all the new computer aided design we've got going here in THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND AND TEN AAAAAHHH-AAH-OOH-AAAHHH there's no excuse for this kind of faggotry.

All I'm saying is that there's no excuse for it, number one, and number 2, I think they missed the small window they had. Maybe I'm wrong. Hell, I *hope* I'm wrong. But let's face it, the freakin' original AE86 didn't even sell all that well. This will be a huge flopperdoodle for Toyota and then they'll cut it and be all 'We don't make sports cars because nobody buys 'em.'

They stopped development (even called it cancelled) on the car about the time the world economy shit the bed. Then picked it back up again last year. Im pretty sure that link is in this thread somewhere.
And who gives a fuck? Does that make it a worse car because its late? Shit, Im the one who should be complaining because I was planning on buying one when they were supposed to be here in 2008. You planning to hop in your time machine and live in 2008 forever ?

The WRX is ugly, fat, more expensive and mostly just a utility car with a pulse. Not even close to comparable.

It all comes down to cost. If they can make the base model come in at $20k and the pimped out turbo model come in at $25k, why the hell would you buy a civic si or some fwd shitbox for the same money. If the base model is $25k, well yeah.....thats a tough sell with only 200hp.

You have not been following factory five have you? Tongue Check our their mid-engine roadster concept that they started designing this past year and have already built up all the chassis, just need a "shell" design. WRX-based running gear, and rwd and less than 2000lbs, AND less than $10k.

The factory five kit is now $13k for a base kit, but now acceepts 87-2002 donors, so no worry about running out of parts  Trust me ive been doing a lot of research about Factory Fives, even ordered their "order" kit. I simply do not have the space and time, and certainly not the money while im saving for a house.

And Evan, yes I understand what your saying...but they do have to have profit, and they have tons of stakeholders, and they shareholders are the owners who of course dont want it to fail. Theyve already sold over 8000 Cobra kits, shit thats as many Eclipse GSXs were built from 95-99.

Yeah but a kit car has very different requirements and different regulations to meet than a production car. They don't have to meet the same emissions or safety regulations, not to mention that they don't have to meet the same bar of build quality or reliability that a production car does. Then there's the fact that all of the labor needed to assembly the car is done by you, which is a huge part of the cost right there. Selling a kit car simply cannot be reasonably compared to building and selling a street car. Not the same league, not the same sport.

5 dollars says that when and if this thing ever hits market, it'll get outsold by the tC.
