The market is BEGGING.... - Evan - 07-31-2007 ..for a economical RWD sport coupe. Will Toyota bring back the AE86? http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/22/toyo ... rive-ae86/ Could Nissan build a cheaper 4cylinder powered rwd coupe off the G platform? Will Mazda build something like the 3 seat concept a couple years ago based off the RX-8/MX-5 platform? Will an american manufacturer steal the prize with something based off the Solstice/Sky like what Andy posted? Im waiting. And I really dont want to spend $30k on a BMW 1 series, but I will if I have to. Re: The market is BEGGING.... - .RJ - 07-31-2007 Evan Wrote:..for a economical RWD sport coupe. Dont you have 5 of them? Yeah, I know convertible != coupe, but you have a few hard tops... - Andy - 07-31-2007 Evan is on the ball with this. But I would want it in the 20K range, if not in the teens. Priced like a Scion TC minus teh suck would be ideal. The interior doesn't have to blow my mind away but Scionish would suffice. I would even buy that god awful dodge demon pile if it was priced in the 14k-15k range. - Feersty - 07-31-2007 The market is also beggin for people to buy. It's really cheap right now. I added more to my IRA this week. - Dave - 07-31-2007 Scary thought. Rex and I actually discussed trying to draw up a proposal to send to Scion with exactly that. The TC powerplant would even be a great heart for it. Not to mention the Scion price is great it's the right target buyer. - .RJ - 07-31-2007 Feersty Wrote:The market is also beggin for people to buy. It's really cheap right now. Ok... :?: Car prices have always gone up, as an aggregate trend. - Goodspeed - 07-31-2007 :dunno: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/30/confirmed-hyundai-making-tiburon-replacement-rwd/ I wouldn't laugh just yet - Andy - 07-31-2007 Goodspeed Wrote::dunno: Hyundai is moving upmarket and that RWD sedan/coupe would be a GT cruiser. V6/V8 doesn't equal low prices. - ScottyB - 07-31-2007 i'd want a coupe that was simple. i hate how everything these days has to be leather wrapped, puffy plastic covered, fly by wire, insulated and isolated. let the bare painted metal show in the cockpit. make the assist minimal on all controls. no electronic BS. as a bonus, it would be cheaper that way. look at the damn miata....it went basically 16 years without much change from the bare bones original. and it's one of the best selling sports cars, and THE best selling roadster of all time. and i still don't understand why mazda never brought the NB hardtop coupe over here. it was beautiful and would have sold. - CaptainHenreh - 07-31-2007 ScottyB Wrote:and i still don't understand why mazda never brought the NB hardtop coupe over here. it was beautiful and would have sold. Because it was a limited edition one-off that *never* would have sold well here. Look, everyone wants a small RWD Coupe but nobody wants to pay for it. It's easier to just make a small convertable, offer a hardtop, and sell a million more than you would have with a coupe. Why make a coupe when it takes just as much engineering to make a convertable, except you can sell 3 times as many to secretaries and sorority girls. - Apoc - 07-31-2007 I think what everyone is forgetting is only "enthusiasts" drive RWD these days and they generally don't mind spending the money... at least that's what car makers think. Economical and FWD are butt buddies. Vauxhall VX220 anyone? - Andy - 07-31-2007 Apoc Wrote:I think what everyone is forgetting is only "enthusiasts" drive RWD these days and they generally don't mind spending the money... at least that's what car makers think. I don't see anyone here who's bought one...Direct injection turbo rwd...quit talking out your ass. What you REALLY want is a RWD manual coupe that doesn't hold it's value for shit, so you can buy it in 5 years for pennies. - CaptainHenreh - 07-31-2007 Double post goodness: If you guys like cheap RWD Coupes so much, why doesn't anyone have one of these: ![]() - Andy - 07-31-2007 andy Wrote:Evan is on the ball with this. I almost bought the Sky last year but realized dropping high 20's for a toy was pretty retarded. Had it been in the teens, or a touch over 20, that would've been okay. I like your buy it 5 years from now for pennies even better though. *the benz is gay as shit. gayer than the miata, even* - CaptainHenreh - 07-31-2007 Andy Wrote:*the benz is gay as shit. gayer than the miata, even* See, there's no pleasing you people. Supercharged RWD four cylinder, manual trans, light and small. WTF do you want? - Apoc - 07-31-2007 I almost suggested that Benz but was certain I'd get called an eurowhore. FWIW, I don't think the market is begging for anything like what Evan suggested. - Evan - 07-31-2007 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Double post goodness:I said 'economical' I do actually like those and I have since they came out (despite the terrible ad campaign of 'buy a cheap mercedes so you can tell your friends you have a mercedes') but even used ones are still too much money. Like Andy said, high teens. With maybe a tarted up version in the low to mid 20s. No one thought a car like the WRX would sell, and Subuaru was hesitant about bringing it out. It sold something like 3x what they expected. CaptainHenreh Wrote:A Saturn Sky. I don't see anyone here who's bought one...Direct injection turbo rwd...quit talking out your ass.I also said 'coupe' as in bigger than a convertible. with a backseat. hell, make it a 5 door like is all the rage now. The new Volvo C30 makes my peepee tingle, but its fucking fwd. Andy Wrote:I almost bought the Sky last year but realized dropping high 20's for a toy was pretty retarded. Had it been in the teens, or a touch over 20, that would've been okay. The Solstice is a touch over 20. I havent looked at Sky pricing because its ugly as fuck but it shouldnt be too much more unless there are just more shit that is standard rather than optional. - ScottyB - 07-31-2007 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Why make a coupe when it takes just as much engineering to make a convertable, except you can sell 3 times as many to secretaries and sorority girls. damn you and your sensibilities. for the record, the benz is not the best example. it's not really fast, or light, or good looking, and it's expensive....though admittedly i've considered that, and the 318Ti  - Evan - 07-31-2007 Apoc Wrote:I think what everyone is forgetting is only "enthusiasts" drive RWD these days and they generally don't mind spending the money... at least that's what car makers think. Economical and FWD are butt buddies.I disagree, I think we are seeing a resurgance of RWD. The new chryslers are RWD (only because they are based off last gen Mercedes, but regardless) the sport compact market is over fwd and into awd and rwd. The ONLY sense fwd makes is for platform engineering. And since now the automakers have viable rwd platforms, I think we should see some downmarket rwd econo coupes. fuck the regurgitated "stick a slightly bigger engine in a fwd shitbox" formula that has been done until vomit inducing. |
