Just ordered an exhaust wrap kit with the silicone spray, electronic goodies to make my own dash lights, diodes and an electronic flasher for the LED signals, and some new exhaust gaskets. This spending money crap is easy.
Also going to shim the valves this week, probably wednesday and either have it running again thursday or friday night.

Piston Slap.
I'm fucked, I am anally fucked on biblical proportions. I can't sell it and get anywhere close to even. I can't part it out and break even, not to mention the time that takes. I don't have the $400 for a replacement motor, and rebuilding the bottom end is massively daunting and more expensive than a replacement.

save up for a couple weeks and you'll have a new motor. i wish car stuff was that cheap.
sorry to hear but 'tis but a flesh wound. it's fixable and you'll get a chance to learn more about the bike, although i know you'd rather be riding.

+1, sure it sucks but in the grand scheme of things, $400 for a new motor is like what, the cost of clear corners for E36 M3s?

I think this is the most sound advice I've heard so far. I think now that I'm calmer and a little more realistic about things. I've got a pretty good plan of attack. Part of me wants to sell the thing step off the ship, losses be damned, just not deal with it anymore and get a little fraction of my money back out.
The majority of me wants to sell my soul and fix it as soon as possible.
I think what I'm actually going to do is take a few deep breaths, take it to my favorite little shop here and have them check it out and see if they think its terminal. If they do, as I suspect they will, I'll take it home, drain the fuel, take the motor out, wrap it up and store it. I'll sell the bad motors and other spare parts I have. I think I'll sell the pistol I never play with anymore to help offset the cost some, and then eventually replace the motor when I find a good deal on one and bring the bike back to life.
I'd like to do it right away, but this summer has been paycheck to paycheck, and right now the car needs tires real bad. The 3 majority of the 3 paychecks I have coming for the rest of the summer need to be saved, so I'm going to have to try and grow as much cash out of extra parts and shit i don't use anymore. Might take a while and it might not even get done in the 5 weeks before school, but eventually she'll live again.
EDIT: However, its worth stating, for people like us (maybe just me) that invest so much (all of) their free time into projects like its, its a full on emotional blow to go from musing about what kind of clock/thermometer you want to stick on your dash to having your motor all of a sudden struggling for survival.

You should be able to pick up a motor for peanuts. Ask around... try the WERA forum too.

A lot of us in MM have gone through this which is why there is such an appreciation for OEM or simple mods on these boards. Everybody loves those crazy projects, but those that have gone through them realize the emotional part of the equation. I did, and it probably will be a long time before I go for a crazy project again, just not worth it in time and emotion. You can always make more money, $400 bucks when your working full time and have some sort of semblance of a budget will be a non-issue. I say sell it all, count your losses and just focus on having fun while down at JMU. Take the M3 and go do every autocross you can, way more fun than being under a bike with constant money losses and emotional loss.

Dude the motor in my STi blew and I spent $12.5k on a new one. (to be fair, I decided to go big)
Still, you won't get any pity from me You could pick up a part time job at school to raise the couple hundred to replace the motor....or just skip buying beer for a few months!

For the record, Joey already works a ton and goes to school. He works nights delivering food to stupid college students, so I don't even think he parties that much. So its not exactly like he's sitting there doing nothing.

I do work during the school year and I'm working full time this summer, the issue wasn't having the money, it was that this completely shattered the budget of what I was willing to spend on this project. At any rate, I decided to sell my old laptop and my pistol to offset the cost, so I still go back to school with roughly the same amount of money.

Thanks for stepping up to bat but, erm, work hard, play really hard? 8-)

I didn't mean that to come off that you weren't a hard worker, I'm just saying $400 in the grand scheme of things for a motor build is something you should be counting your blessings for

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

When is any sort of automotive move in "madison motorsports" a good financial one? There are some that are more brilliant than others, engine builds are not one of them (yes I did two :oops , then again I sold my second built motor to a sucker for $4400. My first built motor only cost me 3000 bucks, so it only cost me $30 a mile  :vomit:

Exactly, which is why trying to talk someone into a few hundred dollar purchase "because I've been THIS stupid" is silly.
