Im as big of a science geek as anybody, but those articles do have a point. Throwing obscene amounts of energy at particles with the goal of reproducing the creation of time and space, and having no clue what it will actually do doesnt seem like good responsible science.

Yeah but it is impossible to tell what we could learn from this. There are an infinite number of good (and bad lol) things that could come from this. Think of all the unintended inventions and innovations that have come from research.

Steven fucking Hawking doesn't even know what's going to happen when the power is ramped up. He admits this and even points out that there could very well be no economic benefits to the experiments. To me it sounds more like a smart kid pissing match.

However he pointed out that if the LHC were indeed to create minor black holes, his own work on the subject could be verified and he chould receive the highest acclaim in the field.
He said: "If the LHC were to produce little black holes, I don't think there is any doubt I would get a Nobel Prize, if they showed the properties I predict.

He goes on to state that humankind would basically be retarded if we didn't do this research, but never really gives a reason why.
