NASA at VIR - February 20/21 - Work or Race!
#41
I can say in all honestly that was the best VIR Feb event ever. MM took over the tavern Saturday night. Good seeing all the new faces (cause I'll never remember your names) out, and glad I could help out with getting y'all rides.

Agreed, I really wish I'd had the XR out. March VIR isn't far away...time to get wrenching!

Tavern was great - Wild Turkey shots all around. Big props to Kaan for ensuring the new guys were welcome!

Great to see the new guys too, and hope to see them more often.

They really enjoyed meeting y'all too. So far Nate and Chris both have said they want to go back for March VIR, and I know I'll be there.

I am not sure I can relive the shots again in March. However, I'm already looking forward to the March event.

Alan took it much better than anyone else did that weekend. I'm still waiting for the internet heatz on throwing out a qualifying time for being 1lb under weight.

Are the scales even accurate to that amount? Given rules are rules - I guess it's better to be 10lbs over than one 1lb under :dunno:

You probably sweat more than 1lb or water during the a few laps on track.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

The roll on scales are pretty accurate, and they were zeroed in front of the whiners, so don't know what to tell ya. A spec E30 came in 120 pounds under. That's poor planning right there.

As Julie said, the roll on scales are super accurate.

Obviously in tech you get to meet every racer. at some point they have to see you. and in the "family" environment that is NASA MA... its hard to DQ times or people from races that you know. But i've had to do it to Chris Cobetto and other people... It sucks but... you have to come across the scales at a certain weight... and if you dont, my hand is forced.

FYI, i've decided year end championships over 3lbs. When that person comes to the track, he is the first one on the scales in the morning, and he can tell you within 1lb what his car will weigh every time. he learned his lesson well.

Interestingly enough, I prefer the old NASA scales to VIR scales. We had problems with the VIR scales in SCCA as well. I will tell you that on Sunday I weighed after getting 3 gals of fuel. weight was 2301. Prior to going on track for qual, the coffee (read: colon lube) started to work. I went to restroom then went out to qualify. After 3 laps of qualifying, I came directly to scales, my weight after 3 laps and visit to bathroom was 2302......

I still think the scales weigh cars differently early in the am. I dont know if it is only because of the extreme cold and its affect on the springs or what. I did check the scales twice with Kaan there and even re-checked them with only weight and no cart to haul the weight. The scales read exactly what the weights were.

I had a fun race anyway with only a small tire mark on my rear bumper from someone turning in too early to follow me through T-1. Made it up to 2nd before the double yellow and I think I could have caught 1st if I had 2 more laps or a re-start. Very fun race though. Unfortunate for those involved in the wreck up the esses.....

To call someone who is questioning the scales for a 1lb variance a whiner is a bit strong. What do you call someone who protests an illegal car or protests a driver passing under yellow?

I only wanted clarification because of the extreme change in the weight of my car which still hasn't been figured out by me. I have NEVER come in under weight in any of my races (SCCA and NASA) in 5 years of racing and keep very close records of what I add and remove from my car to insure it doesn't happen (including fuel amounts).

I don't think Julie was calling YOU a whiner, just that there were ALOT of whiners in the tech shed on saturday. Whining about the scales, whining about their restrictors, whining about all kinds of stuff. One guy (grossly under weight) was all 'Well what am I *supposed* to weigh!?!?'

C'mon dude, you're racing here and you don't know what you weigh? Or what you're supposed to weigh? I mean, that's why we open the scales so early, and at VIR it is so stinking simple to weigh your car, just drive on and we'll give you a printout with your corners! There's no reason not to and definitely no reason to whine. (please note, I'm not talking about You, Ole) But I had guys who thought that a gallon of gas weighed 8 lbs (it doesn't) and guys "eyeballing" the amount of fuel they are adding.

At VIR I'll weigh anything. Want to know what your tire weighs? Bring it by. Want to know how much weight all the fuel left in your can will add? Bring it by, fill it, then bring the empty can to subtract.

Getting dq'd for a pound sucks, and I'm really glad those are Kaan and Mitchum's calls to make, not mine. But we don't like to dq people I much prefer to hassle people about their stickers.

ha ha, I think I buy 6 stickers every race weekend to make sure I have enough....

No excuse for coming in greater than 10 lbs under weight. If someone complains about the scales for 10 lbs. shame on them. They should have weighed their car prior to practice and Qual.

I left Summit having 5 lbs to spare with fumes coming out my fuel test port, that is how close I monitor the weight. That is why I wanted to test the scales with the weight. I had at least 1 gal of fuel in the car which should have given me 10-11 lbs to spare. I still can't explain Sundays difference and won't try any more, I will run with an extra gal of fuel next month......

That really wasnt' directed at you at all Alan, I know it may not have seemed that way in my poorly worded post. You are far from a whiner and I actually thought you handled yourself really great when you came in under. I was actually thinking of the '99 owners who bitched about impound. So I'm really sorry I offended you. Again, you in my opinion, did everything correctly. You had questions about your weight and you asked them. Though you may not have been happy about the answer you didn't argue, you just went and fixed the problem.

Understood, thanks for the clarification. There were some upset people in tech. Poor Adam got grilled and then some.

Ok good. I didn't want you upset with me, Alan. I did feel for Adam, cause he did have to deal with them.
