A little more info on the BMW 1-Series

Looks a lot better than the drawings on BMW's site.

Official performance specs from C&D are out:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/high_performance/bmw_performance_m_power/2008_bmw_135i_short_take_road_test">http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot ... _road_test</a><!-- m -->

Curb weight: 3420 lb

C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 4.7 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 11.5 sec
Zero to 140 mph: 25.6 sec
Street start, 5ÔÇô60 mph: 5.5 sec
Standing ┬╝-mile: 13.3 sec @ 106 mph
Top speed (governor limited): 143 mph
Braking, 70ÔÇô0 mph: 157 ft
Roadholding, 328-ft-dia skidpad: 0.89 g

That is really really fast, it's a shame it's so expensive and looks like a chick car Sad They've gotten a 335i to break into the 11s with basically just a tune, downpipes and an intake mod, the 1 series is going to be a freaking monster with some mods!

Although it wouldn't be called an M1 -- since that moniker is reserved for supercar status -- the so-called 135i SuperSports would get a bunch of improvements, consisting mostly of lightweight body panels, a decontented interior, as well as an upgraded suspension and brake package. Power is said to come from the latest version of BMW's outstanding 3.0L turbocharged inline-six that's rated at 326-horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque in the 2009 7 Series.

I agree with their comments about them rather having a better priced model.

Perfect 1-series to me would be:

1. Much lighter (get rid of all of that sound deadening and heavy stuff like 36 way heated seats)
2. 200-225 hp four cylinder
3. Cheaper

135i puts up impressive numbers but paying $40k+ for a sub-Civic sized BMW doesn't appeal to me. But then again I'd probably never buy one either way.

So I got a little curious because I've been seeing a bunch of BMW diesel commercials. Bragging about how much further you can go on diesel, blah blah, super new awesome technology that we thought of that everyone's been using forever, blah blah. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something new, so I check their site, and no. No changes. The cheapest BMW diesel I can get is a $44k 335d. Oh, wow. 36mpg highway! AMAZING. Or, $51k X5! YAY! Yup, that'll change everything and save the planet for sure.

Yeah it sucks that we don't get any of the 4 cylinder BMW's here. They even sell the 120d in Latin America for crying out loud (saw a few in Panama).

don't you also have to fill up on some weird catalyst crap called urea? that would be a PITA and its not cheap.

maybe if the 3 series didn't weight as much as a 7 series it could do better than a ford focus on highway mpg.

They have Urea injection, which have to be filled up/changed every now and then. Basically like really slow water injection. Makes it horribly expensive to maintain a diesel. Just when diesels overcome the smell, they now are burdened by other bullshit. Its just the US's attempt to destroy diesel.

whoa whoa whoa, I'm sure I'm not the only one who really wants to see the BLINGMW edition 120d designed by Channing himself. Its hybrid red bull & vodka/boxed wine/diesel powerplant goes from 0-angry in 5 seconds. It features many creature comforts such as 7 knife holders accessible by the driver, fender bashing cane in the trunk and well, really thats it.

But this urea thing, I hadn't even heard about that. After some reading.... it's odd. But they are talking about a tank lasting 15k miles... so.... I guess maybe that's ok? Whatever. Thanks for the heads up though.

I get around 35mpg highway in MY car and it's not diesel. That's really not impressive at all. VW seems to make the only diesels that are worth their salt for gas mileage for here in the states anyway.

Urea Injection reduces emissions but I don't know about the "makes it horribly expensive to maintain a diesel". The EPA hated the idea because it's something the owner had to maintain, but they (the epa) have such strict NOx and Particulate emissions standards that basically nobody can reach it for passenger cars. VW could only do it because our up-to-just-a-little-while-ago engine was like 4 generations old.

It's simple chemistry. A leaner (and therefore more fuel efficient and "green") combustion creates more oxides of nitrogen. The EPA wants to have a magic box where the only exhaust is water vapor and sunshine, and they don't want any unicorn piss injection system to do it.
