Project: Timmy the 240

So this car began as my daily driver. I started drifting it on the streets in early '08 when I bought it. Thought I was having fun, but I really started enjoying it when I started to drift the track at Summit Point, and Old Dominion Speedway. I joined a group called Slideways (http://www.slidewaysonline.com) which are now like my family, and the perspective of the car completely changed!
The car currently sits on Stance GR+ Coilovers, Sportmax wheels (16x8- 0 offset), and is awaiting a transplant. I threw a rod through the block last season at the track with the stock motor, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. Plus, that stock power was getting real old.

The plan: I've been working all summer and since school started to try and get enough money to finish this bad boy off. The issue has been money (of course right) with getting the motor all together, so I just gotta wait til I have money to finish up! Very close though!! I bought the infamous SR20DET from a buddy of mine who was having blowby with it. The motor was running when I bought it, but needed some serious work, so it was going to need a rebuild for sure. Here's some of the work done before the motor blowage, and after...

Pulled the diff and got a buddy to weld it up for drifting. But dang it kinda sucked for daily driving... haha
[Image: GetAttachment-2aspx.jpg]

Car was stripped of course. Sure made for a hot ride since I chiseled away all the sound deadening (that exhaust is right under your feet!). Rattle canned it all down.

Had an incident with the wall at Summit Point...

Got it all fixed up mostly.

All was okay, until.... that rod didn't feel at home anymore
[Image: 4635_205850570323_513820323_6972913_4717609_n.jpg]

I'm very fortunate to have a girlfriend with an awesome dad! haha. His garage is more than enough to get some work done.
[Image: 4635_205844780323_513820323_6972832_979406_n.jpg]

Pulled the KA out, and prepped for the SR.
[Image: 4635_205847210323_513820323_6972843_6503009_n.jpg]

Prepped the bay. Now its silver.

I got to work on the re-build of the new motor.
And so the parts started to pile up as it came apart...

[Image: 4965_211020715323_513820323_7098508_1186833_n.jpg]

I hand lapped all of the intake and exhaust valves.
[Image: 6370_223558475323_513820323_7445841_7100305_n.jpg]

So here was the problem with the motor... ring lands were all broken apart on 2 of the pistons! That'll cause that blowby!
[Image: 6130_253378225323_513820323_8189408_7036203_n.jpg]

After tearing it all apart, I had a machine shop handle the honing of the block, they decked the head, planed the block, hot tanked it all for cleaning, checked my valve guides, gave it a bench leakdown test (thank god the valves seal well! haha. I was worried about my home lapping job on the valves).
I recently ordered 4 new pistons, turbo lines, walbro 255 fuel pump, got all my gauges in, new gasket set including the turbo too, arp head studs and rod bolts, a cosworth metal head gasket, piston rings, rod bearings, rocker arm stoppers, and other miscellaneous accessories. Still have yet to purchase a FMIC, electric fans, wire to relocate the battery, and intake stuff...
It should all be getting put back together in about a month, and then I'll still need the parts listed above. But once I get those, I should be all set to start her up!

And the car as it sits now...

I have a couple short clips of the car trying to get sideways with the stock power... Can't wait til this motor is complete to get back on track with more power!

Love the car, the interior looks sick. What turbo did the redtop SR's come with, T25 or 28 or ?

T25. I had a t28 given to me at a drift event for winning a beginner's competition a while ago, but it was from an RB... them skyline motors have their turbos clocked differently and also have a different flange on the exhaust side. anyways, woulda ended up spending a load of money on adapters, so I'm just taking my friend's t25 for free which he's getting rid of, and I sold the t28 Smile

nice work on the car. do you drift with really beat/hard rear tires or is the suspension set up to be tail happy for what you do?

Thanks! Honestly, i wish I could afford tire choice in the rear. But the way ya go through tires, I'd have to be rich to actually buy them! haha. I just snatch any old tires from behind tire shops when they're throwing them out. Typically 195 55's for the cheap sets of drift wheels I have. It works until I actually get some power. Then I will have to look into having MORE grip. It's an odd concept for me right now since I was running such low power, but I'm hoping this new motor sheds new light on my abilities.
The spring rates on the coilovers are 8k in front, 6k in the rear. I've got the dampening set to just about as tight as possible.

Get your hate outta here. Nice, the T25s in those SR20s are horrendously small but will work in what your doing. I like the project so far, looks good.

thanks man. yeah they really are tiny, but I have plans in the future (one day way down the road) for a turbo upgrade, along with injectors and all that good stuff. but I gotta start small.

Any tips on painting floorboards? Did you sand, primer, paint?

That should be all that's necessary in yours. The 240s gets so hot b/c the header is wrapping around/under the corner where your right heel sits as it heads toward the trans tunnel. Some kind of heat shield/reflector would do wonders right there.

I remember that after about 10 minutes on track the floorboard of my 240 would be hot enough to melt my shoe and I'd have to keep my heel off the floor for the rest of the session. Header wrap helped out, but didn't eliminate it unfortunately.

what do you use to do the valve lapping?

i watched your drifting video (might have been your intro thread) and you really slide it around nice. great camera angle too. do you clutch kick to initiate some of that or are you just sawing the wheel? hard to tell from the camera view.

I've been running w/o sound deadening, carpet, etc on the floorboards for awhile. That's nuts about lifting your shoe almost melting.

I was more curious of what process he did for the results from the pictures. Looks good, and I am in the process of re-doing mine as I rushed it the first time. Just lazy, and don't want to bust out the palm sander if i dont have to.

PS- Keep the Zenki front end, all of my drifting friends thought it was cool to go the kouki, I personally love the zenki better.

With all these project and intro threads, I'm having to google too many engine/car/part designations.

Prefer the Zenkei, I think it fits the "roundness" of the rest of the car better.

Were you able to get away with just a hone or did they they have to open up the bore a little? It looks the material from the ring lands could have torn up the walls pretty good. Plus, adding a few extra cubes never hurts while you're in there.

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

haha. thanks man. me too actually. The kouki gets so overplayed, and plus, ends up costing more to buy a kouki.

I hand lapped them with that little wooden tool with suction cups each end of it shown in the picture next to all the valves laid out. Just kinda flip the head over, put the plunger thing on the valve when the valve is through the valve guide, and put on this lubricant. Don't know the name of it, but it's gritty and silver. Lubricant goes around the edges of the valve. And you spin kinda like you're trying to start a fire with wood by hand, lifting up about every other turn to make sure lube gets placed in the mating surface. It's real basic, and if you youtube it, there's some videos on "how to"...
about the video... thanks! Really, it's a total mix of techniques. E-brake sometimes get used, sometimes feint it into the turn, sometimes ebrake and clutch kick together, sometimes just clutch kick. Typically, I end up using clutch kicks more to keep the drift going. On the video of the Pistol Grip, the very last turn is a good example where I simply lacked on power and needed to clutch kick. You can't hear it as well as when you're in the car, but I am 100% on the throttle pretty much through that whole run, and when I'm full on the throttle and going around a long turn and begin to lose angle because of lack of power, I kick the clutch a couple times to upset the balance some more.

Actually ya, the block measured out okay and so I just went with the hone. Bore would've been an extra 200-300 bucks Confusedhock: and since I didnt need it, I stuck with the hone. The ring lands that were broken off were held together almost perfectly by the rings, and only came apart with those sharp edges once I pulled the rings off. hah. that's when I found out I had broken pistons when I was going to stick on the new rings. I was like "NOOO!!! Agh, just ANOTHER part I have to buy"

navin Wrote:Any tips on painting floorboards? Did you sand, primer, paint?

Well man when I took out the sound deadening, I ended up grinding down to metal past the deadening, and primered from there, and then painted. Actually started silver, and recently did over top the silver with white.
But of course, with any painting, please cover EVERYTHING well. ha. don't end up with slightly tinted with white console like me! ha. it was covered, but not sealed very well

Got a load of parts stacked up now, but I am still a ways away from cranking her up. Here's some pics...

Racked up parts:
[Image: 7635_291504525323_513820323_8926034_2362995_n.jpg]
[Image: 7635_291504510323_513820323_8926032_1722700_n.jpg]

New oem pistons. Installing the rings tomorrow, and trying to figure out how the rod bolts come off/ how the arp rod bolts get put on....
[Image: 7635_291504490323_513820323_8926030_7666504_n.jpg]

Got the block painted finally. Also painted the head.
[Image: 7635_292169470323_513820323_8935367_5906730_n.jpg]

I began to assemble the block. Only got to putting the bearings in (yeah I know the thrust bearing is off center... haha. I took em back out since they just sit there...) I had to stop there, because I didn't know that the main bolts stretched and weren't re-usable Sad So I just ordered ARP main studs. Gotta wait for them to get here to continue.
[Image: 7635_292169490323_513820323_8935368_7955457_n.jpg]

It wants to be pieced together so bad!!!
