Our second daughter is working on her license and will likely face some restrictions her older sister did not. I'm just curious what kind of driving restrictions you guys had when you first got your license, if any. (no driving at night for x months, no more than x people in the car, no driving if any grade less than c...)

Well I had a curfew of I think 9, had to call when I got to where I was going and when I was leaving to come home. Those were the two biggies I remember. Grades were never a problem for me. Driving at night, I played sports and had practice so driving at night was a must. My parents were more strict about who I rode with then me actually driving. But isn't there a restriction of how many people can be in the car that the state mandated, if your under a certain age? For some reason I thought there was?
State laws that I found annoying and continuously broke aside from usual laws I break driving.
Under 17 only allowed 1 other person in vehicle aside from family members over the age of either 18 or 21.
Under 18 allowed only 3 other people in vehicle aside from family members over the age of either 18 or 21.
Under 18, may not drive a vehicle past 12PM midnight

could obtain permit at 15 y/o, eligible for taking a state-sponsored driving course at 15.5 y/o. had to pass a state-sponsored driving course or take DMV driving test, pass DMV written test, and have held permit for atleast 6 months prior to applying for a license at 16 y/o
other than that no restrictions (back in 1999). also could park in student lot of the high school with no permit required
t'was nice :-D
Laws when I got my license in MD:
15y/o & 9 months - Written test to get your learners permit, had to do 1-week drivers-ed course (I forget how long the classes were), 40 hours of instruction w/ another driver and 6 hours with a driving instructor.
16y/o & 1 month - Obstacle course based driving test - if you passed you got a provisional license.
Provisional license restrictions in MD:
-No driving after 12pm unless you were coming home from work or with an older adult
-No more than 1 passenger in the car
Provisions could be removed after 18 months if you had a clean driving record (I did, went to the DMV to get them taken off and got my first ticket a month later.)
Personal parental restrictions were that I could drive the car whenever so long as I had a job and was in a least one extra-curricular activity at school.

I'm wondering mostly about parental restrictions. We are in "negotiations" with her dad on what to do about insurance. We cover her sister and he wants to "construct strict rules of consent to drive" that he puts in place.
So, I'm just curious, I didn't really have any beyond the call when you get there and my car had a curfew that was earlier than my personal curfew.
Adam, I like the 'at least one extra-curricular activity" rule. Hopefully you got something out of it.

1:00 curfew and no more than a 6 pack was what my dad always used to say when I pulled out of the driveway

Not really - I just joined an art club (I can't draw or paint worth a lick) that went on an awesome NY trip once a year where I drank, smoked and hung out with my friends on my parent's dime. It might have helped on college applications though....
I have always been personally motivated though - the job was a good experience and a good way to get extra cash (enough to install 2 12" sub-woofers in the car at least.)

My parents did the "call when you get there" if it was a longer drive than somewhere in-town. That eventually decreased. They also liked me to call when I was leaving to come home, same distance.
Other than that, they trusted me to follow the 'people per car' limit that VA driving law imposes - which I did, most times. I was only ruled by that for a few months anyway.
VA driving curfew was midnight, so they expected me home by then, unless I called and told them I'd be running late. I think the most I pushed that was until 1. After I turned 18, the whole curfew thing became irrelevant.
We were under the agreement that any maintenance on the car (that belonged to M&D) would be paid by them, but any accidents were on me. Thus, no accidents. Same for tickets.
I think it was expected that I keep my grades up, which wasn't a big deal anyway. I was in marching band throughout high school, so late night driving was nothing new - I had plenty of practice. IMO, saying "you can't drive when it's ____" is pointless, because it scares the driver into thinking the driving style during whatever condition (dark, cold, snowy, rain) is dangerous. You just have to teach them how to drive for whatever conditions - and that means taking them out in every condition during Permit Time.

well when i was a teenager i was borrowing the parents car because i didn't own one, so that gave my parents alot of leverage (which i hated of course).
i had to be home by midnight and call when i got somewhere i was going or if i'd be late. i had to pay any tickets and if it was serious my liscense was gone. had to pay for any gas used. my dad kept a semi-rough track of the milage (he drove the car every day to work so it was easy to tell i guess) so they'd know if i went driving around all night instead of going straight to a friend's house and not telling them.
any accidents due to screwing around and i was out the repairs and my liscense was gone so that kept me from doing anything stupid....at the time

i was lucky enough to have my mom pay for my insurance until i graduated college (very thankful for that since she didn't want me getting a job and to focus on school). i had to pay for my own gas, repairs, mods (obviously), although she helped sometimes with anything major. tickets were definitely out of my own pocket. i'd imagine if i rose the insurance high enough she would've made some sort of restriction on other things somehow.
a real punishment, without removing the ability to drive, would be forced to drive something crappier, yet still safe/reliable relative to what their current car would be at the time. give'm something without power steering ;-)
when i learned how to drive, my mom started me with rental cars on vacations when i was as young as 13 (just around an empty parking lot or somewhere with no hazards). she started teaching me to drive stick at 14. i had my permit when i was 15. my mom actually let me drive by myself when i was 15 for a long time. i had about 8 months of driving experience alone before i even applied for my license.
i didn't really have any restrictions for curfew or anything - a phone call when i left, what time i'd be back, and having to answer every call that was made from her (or calling back within a reasonable time) was all my mom required. i rarely stayed out that late in HS though, and if i did, it was usually with familiar friends.
My memory sucks, but the primary one I remember was calling when I got somewhere and calling when I was leaving to come home, and that I had to be home before midnight. I was really involved in clubs, but I think that might be a good restriction too b/c it might broaden her interests and if nothing else looks good on a resume/college app.
Parents paid insurance and bought the first car (so they got to pick what I drove), but I had to pay for gas and general maintenance. If something big broke, they picked it up. Tickets, and consequences of jackassery were on me, so I behaved for the most part; I paid for any modifications I wanted to make as well.
Aside from dad teaching me how to drive stick in his truck on the back roads of NC (which mom wasn't happy about), my first day turning a wheel was with the driving instructor. It was a bit intimidating and I resented mom for it b/c it made me look like an ass.
dont hit anything.
fucked that one up twice.
