Forget the miata, we bought a Mustang GT with low miles that you totally need to get yourself into for about 6k. V8 and torque > I4 and no torque.

Seriously this is really sad. Im going to miss that car terribly, I have been working on that car since I was 16 years old, spent a high-school winter break in 20 degree temps changing out that headgasket and was there for its first photoshoot, and subsequent drift/crash lol.
Here is a pic from her 2 days old when I was 16...wow long time ago.

Lol, I've had torque, at least after the turbo lag. Now I want nimbleness!
DJ, I'm surprised, I figured you'd be DSM-whoring by now. Shoulda bought it! Squishy, comfy SC but with a turbah!

I was at Deal's Gap this past weekend for Miatas at The Gap (post with story & pix to follow) and drove a Speed Miata that had been boosted a little more. Holy hell was it fun and the turbah is addictive.

But you want to get more into road racing, a dsm is a big epic fail for that. Its just too much car and too expensive on track. You just gotta prevent yourself from modding too much (my epic fail) and the car is also tempermental and requires a person with great mechanical know-how. Although a stock one would probably last forever. For you, I suggest that there miata, although "pimping" through campus is  with that. How about an e36 m3, you can find them in the 5-9 range nowadays, with just a year or two off of the miatas your looking at. Your going to have to get another personal mechanic though, lol. Although I may be switching to the dark side, depends on how a test drive goes tonight.

I could get a lot of other cars, but I want something that is small and light before I tackle larger, more demanding cars. I want something that is not intimidating to work on, simple, and cheap to do so. Training wheels, so to speak.

an E36 wil probably wipe it's german-spec butt with your wallet. even cars that have been well maintained are, at this point, getting into the 100k+ milage range where random stuff breaks. believe me, i'm crazy tempted as my next car to pick up a 98-99 M, but there is just a load of wear parts on those cars. lots of bushings to replace, cooling system components that like to "expire", and interior electrical bugs. the base components are tough though and they do everything well.
how about a toyota MR-S? they are not as "standard" in layout as the miata so they aren't as easy to wrench on, but they are touted as being exceptional handlers right out of the box and are extremely efficient (35mpg highway) and pretty darn reliable. they have a crazy low curb weight (2200 lbs) and the 1ZZ engine is not too powerful to kick your ass upon entry into mid engined motoring. think of a poor man's elise. they are cheap to buy at this point and real cheap to insure. also, they have a more spacious cabin than the miata or even S2K. downfall is the storage space (none) and they are not as easily modified as a miata. also you will want to look at later model years as the early ones had piston ring problems due to cats that would fall apart and get sucked back into the cylinders. i really think the miata would suit you Goodspeed. and you know so many here have, or have had one that you can always ask for a helping hand and get good advice.

Funny you bring up the MR-S. Those are going to become quite a bit more popular in the near future with the release of the STR SCCA class. The MR-S is expected to be a significant force with its extreme low weight and decent power band. The only issue I see with this car is the lack of aftermarket knowledge and fan base in comparison to the ample resources and parts available for the miata. A lot of test and tune would be required to get a proficient setup but I bet that would be a very fun and reliable car. Definitely a cool car and pretty much right at the same price range as a NB miata.

Not at all interested in a MR-S, and though the E36 gives me a boner, never had any intention of picking one of those up, either
