Has anyone used the Geek Squad at BB? He is buying a new computer at BB, I would think they would be able to do this right?

geek squad are morons. I guess thats your only option though if you dont want to do it yourself.

buying a small portable hard drive and doing it yourself would probably be cheaper and then youve got a portable hard drive.

fileshare is cheapest but does require a small level of intelligence to set up so probably not for you Wink

On the same note, there's something to be said for not being the person your family incessantly goes to. I just had a talk with my father (who asked me for repeated advice on a laptop and never took it) telling him if he's not going to properly accept my assistance he needs to start buying extended warranties/support.

oh, you didnt mention how much stuff hes got. If all he has are pictures, documents etc, then you could get a 4gb or 8gb flash drive for $20 and sneakernet the files that way.

if he wants to save his entire midget goat porn collection, then you will need a big hard drive

if he doesnt know how to setup a fileshare, he probabloy doenst know how to open a computer, find the hard drive, pull it out, and put it in the correct type of enclosure

Use a magnet, they can store files and transfer them to the other computer.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

OK The Geek Squad is totally incompetent. Walk me through how to do this with one of those little flash dealies that plug into a USB port. Turns out he doesn't have that much stuff to transfer (maybe 4G).

Plug the flash drive in to the USB port, Windows will automatically recognize it. When you get the "what do you want to do with this" box select "do nothing".

Double click "my computer" and you will be able to see the flash drive listed. If you are working with Vista, it will be under the "devices with removable storage" heading with it's own drive letter. Double click it. Next, drag and drop the files you want to move into the open flash drive window. Take the drive out and put it in the new computer. Drag the files over to where you want them. Done.

Quick question - can you actually get into the old copy of windows (does the old computer still work well enough to access the files?)

If the computer is literally fried you are going to have to do something else than use a USB drive to transfer files.
