Computer Help me pls. - Ole - 03-05-2009 I am at my father-in-laws and he is having trouble with his computer, anyone know of a good way to transfer data between his current computer and a new one his buying? Thanks in adavnce. - stevegula - 03-05-2009 a windows file share? - D_Eclipse9916 - 03-05-2009 Portable hard drives? I love mine. - Ole - 03-05-2009 Has anyone used the Geek Squad at BB? He is buying a new computer at BB, I would think they would be able to do this right? - Evan - 03-05-2009 geek squad are morons. I guess thats your only option though if you dont want to do it yourself. buying a small portable hard drive and doing it yourself would probably be cheaper and then youve got a portable hard drive. fileshare is cheapest but does require a small level of intelligence to set up so probably not for you
- Ole - 03-05-2009 I do appreciate your understanding of my tech savviness.... - stevegula - 03-05-2009 Evan Wrote:geek squad are morons. I just had a talk with my father (who asked me for repeated advice on a laptop and never took it) telling him if he's not going to properly accept my assistance he needs to start buying extended warranties/support. - Evan - 03-05-2009 oh, you didnt mention how much stuff hes got. If all he has are pictures, documents etc, then you could get a 4gb or 8gb flash drive for $20 and sneakernet the files that way. if he wants to save his entire midget goat porn collection, then you will need a big hard drive - Ginger - 03-05-2009 Or he could just take the rive out of the old computer and stick it in an enclosure? - Ole - 03-05-2009 Ginger Wrote:Or he could just take the rive out of the old computer and stick it in an enclosure?Like the trash can? - Evan - 03-05-2009 Ginger Wrote:Or he could just take the rive out of the old computer and stick it in an enclosure? if he doesnt know how to setup a fileshare, he probabloy doenst know how to open a computer, find the hard drive, pull it out, and put it in the correct type of enclosure - Ole - 03-05-2009 is a fileshare, like me giving my turbotax CD to my father-in-law to use as well???? hock:
- Apoc - 03-05-2009 Use a magnet, they can store files and transfer them to the other computer. - Ole - 03-05-2009 Sweet! - Ole - 03-06-2009 OK The Geek Squad is totally incompetent. Walk me through how to do this with one of those little flash dealies that plug into a USB port. Turns out he doesn't have that much stuff to transfer (maybe 4G). - Ginger - 03-06-2009 Plug the flash drive in to the USB port, Windows will automatically recognize it. When you get the "what do you want to do with this" box select "do nothing". Double click "my computer" and you will be able to see the flash drive listed. If you are working with Vista, it will be under the "devices with removable storage" heading with it's own drive letter. Double click it. Next, drag and drop the files you want to move into the open flash drive window. Take the drive out and put it in the new computer. Drag the files over to where you want them. Done. - ViPER1313 - 03-06-2009 Quick question - can you actually get into the old copy of windows (does the old computer still work well enough to access the files?) If the computer is literally fried you are going to have to do something else than use a USB drive to transfer files. - Ole - 03-06-2009 Got it done, thanks guys! |
