Saw you at Summit this weekend, the car looked good. However, how'd you like sitting on grid in 80 degree heat in a flat black race car?

Good for weight reduction! Most of put on the pounds at the race weekends, a black car will help offset the gain........

The first race went well. I finished, and didn't hit anything. In SM, I finished 18th of 28, and overall I was 26th of 41 starting last. I'm looking forward to the Nov. event

I had so many other things going on in my head that I didn't notice the heat at all.

Pain in the ass to take care of- depending on the matte finish, some cars such as the (frozen gray M3's) and such come with a waiver from the factory that you must sign which releases all responsibilities of damage to the matte finish that may be caused by the owner.
A GOOD detailer knows how to take care of such finish- Swissvax has come out with an "opaque" line specifically for the matte finishes
Products with heavy silicone content or petroleum distillates in them- Armor all (crap) will stain the finish and potentially destroy it

Matte finish- better think twice before washing/ spraying it with anything.

Two years later in 2013.... A new clueless member asks...

Is Vinyl Wrapping a good thing? Safe for paint and all that? Is it washable? I know nothing about it, I actually first came across it like three days ago. You get to save your original color while having a sweeeeeeeet look. Sounds good to me, but is it too good to be true?

You can get a sweet matte/flat finish out of it!

Now that I think about it... Is it better to do this or just Plasiti Dip your whole car? o.0
Plasti Dip is removable too right?

Yes- wrapping is generally VERY safe- effective as well- even more effective in my professional opinion then most clear films- removing clear films however is a PAIN IN THE ASS and takes hours. Two rocker panels on the recent 360 challenge that I just worked on took me 2 hours a panel- including removing the film and then safely removing the small traces of left over adhesive

Jon P who works with VBD graphics can better answer vinyl wrapping questions

The downside is that its $$$$$$$$ to wrap a whole car

Jon can give you a better figure but yes- thousands. To give you an idea of how much just clear film costs- front end (even low budget films) clear film application- 1/4 of the good, fender, front bumper, etc. generally runs 2500 or more EASILY. I have a bad opinion on front end clear film- only when it comes to application on fiberglass, composite, or plastic/ urethane pieces (such as the bumper).

I'm a little bit confused. Is clear film basically the same type of material? Just a different purpose? Ooorrr are you referring to something completely different as an alternative to vinyl wrapping?

I was actually reading since I made the post and this guy here paid WAY LESS $120!! Maybe the wrap he used wasn't as high quality? Does the price you estimate include labor?

Dan hit the nail on the head mostly, but I'll add a little more. Benefits of vinyl are that it will protect whatever is underneath of it. It goes on easy and off can be easy or difficult depending on how long it as been on the car. Another benefit is that vinyl will match nearly 100% of the time. You need a new bumper or fender? Send it to me and I'll wrap it in the same color vinyl originally used and it will take half the time a body shop needs to paint it. No worries about color matching.

Vinyl also comes in a variety of finishes: gloss, matte, chrome, matte metallic. Thousands of colors to choose from.

It costs more than a 'racecar' paint job, but way less than a quality paint job. For a miata you are looking at about $2,850 while an e36 will run about $3,500 (retail).

The clear film dan refers to is clear vinyl protectant made by all the big names 3m, Avery, etc. $1,200 for a front end application seems a little steep to me, but depending on the product used it can get up there. Clear protects the paint much more than normal vinyl because it is stronger and 3m currently makes a self healing clear (only one on the market). We clear over top of vinyl all the time to protect both the vinyl work and the paint underneath of it. We have wrapped an entire Ford Raptor in clear - it's bad ass.

I dont know that 3500 is way less than a quality paint job. It's been several years, but my SS is a two stage base/clear paintjob and that was about $3500

So, has flat finish officially jumped the shark yet?

Here at GWU, I see a range rover, GTR, and a few mercedes running around with flat paint, and it looks extremely meh.
