In-laws were in town so we took them to Udvar-Hazy. Unfortunately my full plane shots didn't come out because I didn't want to use a flash and they wouldn't let me use a tripod.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

THIS IS NOW THE OFFICIAL "JET PLANES ARE FUCKING BOOOOOOOOOOOSSS" THREAD
Hey, you dudes wanna talk about fighter jets?
AW MAN I FUCKIN' LOVE FIGHTER JETS!!!
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://en.rian.ru/military_news/20130117/178844683/Russian_T-50_Fighter_Jet_Completes_First_Long-Range_Flight.html">http://en.rian.ru/military_news/2013011 ... light.html</a><!-- m -->
So, the PAK FA (Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation, don't ask, the russians are drunk) recently completed a 7000+ mile flight. Not bad for a "5th gen" 3d thrust vectoring air superiority fighter for UNDER $10B! That's crazy! We'll see how stealthy it is (doesn't look particularly stealthy but who knows) but it's a pretty neat design! Always had a bit of a hardon for russkie jets.
I mean look at it:
So boss. It has no rudders, because the vertical stabilisers MOVE to steer the plane, and of course 3D thrust vectoring helps.
Meanwhile, our "missile truck" F15 replacement trillion dollar abortion of an F35 is grounded...AGAIN due to a possible defect in the (admittedly pretty boss) pratt and whitney engine. FAWK. Why are we dumping money on this POS? USAF F35 "Albatross" is probably accurate at this point.
It's pretty cool looking, though. I gotta say, other than the stealth aspect (which, like, disappears after you load it up with supplemental fuel tanks and ordinance) I dont' know why we aren't just laying down new F-15 airframes. I know the USAF is all "we dont' expect to have pilots in the cockpit in 20 years" BUT WE AIN'T THERE YET, SON, SO STOP SLACKING!
And what are those unwashed cheese eating socialists doing? Oh, well the USAF had a little excercise with Our Golden Child the F22 vs the Eurofighter Tyhphoon and the USAF decided they didn't like what they were seeing so they picked up their marbles and went home.

And some F22 porn just for funsies:
I HAVE SUCH A JET BONER RIGHT NOW

I dont get the F35. What can it do that the F22 cant and why did we stop making F22s?

"What can it do that the F22 can't?"
Land on Aircraft Carriers is pretty much it. It was supposed to be a cheap, capable, air superiority general purpose fighter jet. (Like the F/A18 and F15) It is none of those things.
"Why did we stop making F22's?"
Well, because they were "more expensive than expected" and we can "fill the niche of the remaining F22's with F35's" (which, bee tee dub, are over budget, under performing, and behind schedule.)
Oh, and the USMC wanted the F35C because their harriers are older than moses and they want a new VTOL/STOL fighter. Not sure what they need it for but you know, they never get any cool toys anyway so whatever.

Don't forget that axing the F35 would layoff several thousand people in a bunch of states. So no one wants to kill it, no matter how tumorous it grows. Something about tumbling down a worse financial rabbit hole to keep the project alive than its worth mumblestuff.
Also, while I do love me some jet planes, I humbly submit that there are some boss prop planes too. I'd love to just be able to fly this without dying like almost everyone who attempted did.
So batshit crazy.

VTOL is a joke and Im no battlefield general but I doubt there is much actual realized strategic advantage to a whizbang stealthjet that fucking hovers. thats like chrome spinners of the jet world.
I submit that the P51 is exactly 1/2 as cool as that.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the operational requirement even for the USMC Harrier is...and wherever the USMC goes isn't the navy (and these) close by?:

...and while we're talking about things that make us feel funny, I'm going to add the F-86 to the list.

One of the best documentaries I've seen. It follows the last two F14 pilots as they earn their wings and begin their flight careers. Some amazing footage throughout.
This thread brought back to life?
I see no mention of the B-1?
