I've got one of these hanging above my desk. I gotta tell you, I'd take it over a bat any day of the week.
Also, in case of zombie outbreak I'm just going to find Rex. He seems to have all the answers. Although I would like to add a 50 cal rifle for sporting purposes. There likely won't be any Xbox live so I'm going to need means to entertain myself. I mean what good is surviving an outbreak if you can't have some fun?
Oh and my vehicle would be this:

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
Now with a family I will need mass transit, protection and offensive capability. While I will be limited in maneuverability protection is maximized. Stocking for extended trips away from civilization could be accomplished by driving through the building, hopping out under cover fire and raiding the shelves.

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...
Late the party, as usual.
I'm not one for everybody having their own motorcycle, but I like the idea so I'll build off of it...
Number 1, there is safety in numbers, but you need to keep them small. This gives you the ability to cover your ass if the shit ever hits the fan but the ability to manuever in small tactical units. My supply list for every group of 3 people:
-1 late 80s/early 90s Toyota truck. Top Gear has proven that they are literally indestructible. You may have limited movement, however they are fairly small, leaving you able to go nearly anywhere except for the rockiest of passes. They are light and not particularly slow (should easily outrun a run-of-the-mill zombie, not amped-up 28dayslater zombies)
-2 bikes in the bed. Not a street bike, something relatively fast and low maint. This in case you get royally f'ed and need to bail out superfast.
-boomsticks, several of them. I'll stick with above shotgun recommendation. As pointed out, buckshot is great to keep them at bay, slugs for maximum effectiveness. MUST be readily available in mass quantities.
-crowbars and chainsaws. Again, see above for uses against zombies, but remember our departed friend Scotty when thinking of a glorious charge on a zombie horde. Keep them in the bed of the truck and use as needed. Great for close-bay contact should it ever happen, but more importantly makes breaking into supply houses easier and outdoor survival is more likely.
-a few radios and walkie-talkies to keep in contact with others in your crew
The plan would be accumulate 3-4 trucks and establish a home base far from a major city/densely populated area. Use raiding parties to gather supplies. Establish a compound using supplies from houses, construction, forests, and your chainsaws. Begin cultivating crops immediately. Obviously the first week or two need to focus on survival, but if you survive that long and are seeing diminished numbers of zombies, you have to start thinking long-term and becomign self-sufficient if you want to live.
Also keep in mind that electricity will be pretty much out of the question, as will the internet and vast resource of knowledge that it has, so welcome back to learning it all for yourself... I'd also recommend stocking up on as much fuel as humanly possible as early on as you can, as they will be controlled by electronic pumps and these will probably shut off early on in the situation. you'll still be able to siphon fuel from tanks, but this is a huge liability since you'll be exposed for a long period of time while doing it.
It might also be safe to hide out in a library of a small town. Zombies don't read, so why would they go looking in there for fresh meat? Hell, half of our population probably hasn't even been in a library in the past 10 years :-).
Has anyone thought about attaching a bunch of chainsaws to their vehicle? It would solve the problem of close contact req'd to use a chainsaw and you'd still get to mess up mad zombies with it. It would also solve the ancillary problem of trying to run over zombies in a small vehicle without the use of a plow or cow catcher.

While finding unimogs and helicopters and bad ass guns is fun an all, it's not likely. I'll stay realistic with what I actually have.
Bring van in garage, load bike and gas cans in van.
Load splitting maul, hatchet, revolver/ammo, crowbar, chainsaw, fire extinguishers, flashlights, charcoal.
Load whatever other food/supplies/medicine/tools we have time for.
Haul ass to my coworker's house who has WAY more guns/food and beg him to let me in. If he is already a zombie, then bonus guns/food for me. His house is also a bit out of town, more isolation than ours.
I don't think I'd be in any hurry to get out of town, I'd probably try to stay unless it was obvious that the outbreak was only in this immediate area or something. Leaving the surroundings you know seems like a disadvantage to avoid if possible, I'd rather know the good places to raid or hide out.
good points on the radio though, I need to get a ham, CB, or at least a broadband scanner before this all goes down.

I think the dirtbike is the best idea (damnit i need to go home and rebuild mine), like you all said. As for weaponry, I would want an M16 with a launcher, and an MP5, and a pistol grip mossberg. I think that would be fairly easy to carry. I would also want a katana.
I think then I'd head north to the hudson, as it would be the closest, least populated place to find a seaworthy boat. Chill out on the boat, only coming off for supplies once in a while.

Coal and nuclear power plants must be religiously maintained and refueled. The only places I could see power staying on for long periods of time would be areas that rely on hydroelectric or geothermal generating stations.

because people wouldn't be there to keep it going. as automated as some things may seem, most of this world would shutdown/flood/fall apart very, very quickly.
electricity would probably be gone in a day or 2, nyc subway would flood within a week, etc.

Because all the power plant workers are zombiefied.
The power goes out sometimes when it RAINS, dude. Zombie apocalypse, I'm not counting on electricity.
Also, derek, why would you need an M16 (WITH LAUNCHERZOMG) AND an MP5? I mean, talk about superfluous. And then a shotgun on top of that? You're zombie food mate, because you've got 4 goddamn different kinds of ammo you need to carry, plus 3 guns, and not little ones either. YOu'll barely be able to move. And don't get me started on your katana. Assuming you could actually get your hands on a real one with a full tang, you're still retarded. MONTE CARLO NINJA COMMANDO.
The main thing about zombies is that they shamble. Mobility is key.

gah! the saw is a melee weapon only for small numbers of zombies! i ain't interested in doing a Custer impersonation -- if i see a horde i'm simply running in the opposite direction. if i encounter a zombie or two in a building (like getting supplies from a hardware store), its getting the saw to it's face. i don't want to mess with reloading, running out of or being short on ammo, or needing time to aim for the head.
my entire plan revolves around being totally outnumbered but faster -- retreat until its over. even with guns you will not stop a monster horde of zombies unless you can assure head shots or total lower body destruction to each one.

I think we're all overestimating the real need for electricity. It would no doubt make a lot of the transition easier, but really you're going to want to procure as much raw fuel as you can once you pick a location to hunker down. You really just need fuel to cook / heat yourself / boil water.
I personally would not remain on the move unless a zombie wave was coming through. As most of us here would, I would try to procure a location that is easily defensible in an area that I'm familiar with if possible. Some kind of industrial compound with thick fencing / security would be ideal with lots of chain link to shoot through. When I think of zombies, I don't think of creatures that have the state of mind to grab wire cutters and make holes in fences. Traveling in groups of survivors is key for when you do actually have to leave the compound as well as having a small pickup to grab firewood / other resources.
