Well most of you know, I was on the front straight of VIR and shifted from what I thought was 3rd to 4th, but caught 2nd. And apparently according to gear calculators puts my car at about 10,136 rpm....ouch.

It threw off a belt and put the belt back on...well the car ran fine....for 5 more laps...tehn it started knocking for some reason....and then before I could pull into pits, around oak tree...the engine died..

Towed back to pits and pulled off the valve cover...nothing look damged...until I tried to turn the timing belt...nope...lol...wouldnt turn.

Did a compression check and number 4 was 165...shit real good! number 3...160...within 10% woohoo...number 3...120...oh boy but it should run...number 1....0....FUCCKK!

Got it towed home today, ill start taking her apart tonight. Probably just some valves damaged. So im deciding between just redoing a head, or doing a built 2.0 liter or doing a built 2.3. I am gonna take my time and do it right which leans me towards built motor, but at the same time I know im gonna miss my car. Right now the big thing is...any damage to rods or pistons...if there is...shit there goes in a built motor...but im not quite sure.

Ah man good luck!! I'd so go ahead and build it up while you've got it apart as long as the funds allow. There could also be a lot more damage than you think and it may be your only option. I'm a big fan of adding cubes (obviously) which would probably give you a little bit of a torque advantage during autoXing. I'm sure you'll make the right choice, just get it apart, see how you're feeling and go from there Wink

If just replacing the head check the rod bearings for damage while you are messing with the motor - lots of times you can flatten a bearing revving a motor that high. $60 for new bearings + getting to see the condition of the current units is well worth the time & effort to do the job.

Shit man...sorry to hear about that. Sometimes opportunity actually does knock...ping and rattle.

2.0 to 2.3, is done with stroke bore or both?

Good luck with the rebuild.

2.3 is done by using the crank out of a 2.4L 4g64, no bore needed.

Thanks guys, as I said, itll be all dependent once I remove the head. Dont worry Adam, the bearings were going to be checked if I decided to just do the head, which is probably an unlikely possibility.

I am kind of leaning towards staying with 2.0 liter. Some people are having mixed results with the 2.3 because yeah it spools 3-400 rpms faster but some people say they "wont rev" past 7500-8000rpm. So lets say my turbo would spool at 3400 with the 2.3 and die out at 8000. Thats a 4400 rpm high powerband. With a 2.0 iot would spool at 3800 and rev her out to 9 (lets say 8500 to be conservative) and its a 4700 rpm powerband. Plus less torque would mean less wheelspin and more gradual "hit" of the turbo out of the corner making it much easier coming out of a corner. And between shifts I got NLTS so lag is almost non-existant between shifts.

SOOOOO lots of thinking to do. For now, it does not make sense to go out and buy a car. My original plan was to go and buy a truck, but...seeing as how I will barely be around much for a car anyway in the next year....(2 months of at JMU, 3 months in China, 4 months at JMU, half a month in paris, and then finish up JMU senior year). It just doesnt make sense.

My mom will be getting a new car soon and already promised me (before I blew the car up) to get her car (for free), I may just be car-less for a few months which will let me focus on studies and picking up other hobbies than cars, which seems to be all that I talk about now. Maybe get in shape lol.

She is now sitting in the garage at home. Got a good 2 hours in on her tonight and im doing it right, and labeling everything and putting all bolts in separate baggies labeled where they go. Front bumper, Intake Manifol, Throttle Body, Upper intercooler piping, bov, gm maf, strut bar, battery, intake, fans, accessory belts, radiator hoses, and coolant has been removed. Its fun in a weird sort of way that I can take off everything and do it slowly without a rush of a timeline.

Oh and that turbo was definitely blown, I pulled off the intake and at the bottom of the intake where it connected to the inlet of the turbo sits a good puddle of oil. Luckily its under warranty and will be sent in. So ill have a fresh turbo along with a fresh head/block when she is back together....im almost tempted to send my tranny out to shep....oh where is my money?

Thanks everyone, and Kaan I definitely want those pics!

Does anyone have an engine stand they wont be using in the next year or so?

Oh and Jeff, if that is his secret ingredient, it works...lol...He could kick Chuck Norris's ass.

Blasphemy!!

Sorry to hear it DJ, we all know it'll be back better than ever.
I'd go with the 2.0 and do a simple rebuild, unless you really plan on pushing the envelope later. Of course, it really depends on what the tear-down determines as the failed part. Keep us informed!

Update: Got to work on her for about 1-2 hours this morning before having to head back to jmu.

Pulled off the exhaust manifold, turbo, o2 housing, external wastegate, downpipe, power steering pump, alternator, and radiator. Pretty much she is ready to pull the head when I Come back friday to work on her.

So far im leaning towards a good 2.0 build, some simple wiseco pistons and eagle rods. Itll be good to around 700 so ill run out of turbo before running out of horsepower room. If my bank account is feeling it, I may go with the lightest internals I can find and do a crazy ass head on her so I Can just rev her out to 9 grand, although my turbo will probably fall off at about 8500-8750, plus itll let me stay in one gear as long as possible. We will see, its all up in the air and isnt definite until I start buying some parts!
