two things i've read that i completely agree with.... once you have the gear and one motorcyle, any additional motorcycles come fairly cheaply. that and people seem to think that a motorcycle is a luxury item and less of a practical item.
My FZR gets anywhere from 40-50mpg... to me thats practical!

heh. I think it's all relative. Is your roommate from around here? I have a friend back home who is married, has a brand new house, and a 2 year old. They're not doing too bad - but when I go home, they jokingly tell their kid "here comes 'rich uncle derek' " or some such thing. I do kind of get aggravated by that. Other people usually give me some kind of crap for owning more than one car, even though 2 of them were bought originally for less than $4,000 for both of them (nevermind the sweat equity in them at this point)

Something to consider is that most of us (those still in school except) are making a substantial amount more than the "average" American. Use median, average, whatever measurements you want, and we're doing decently well. Cost of living adjustments have to be made, but even considering that we're well off. Not that I think any of us are rich, or anything. If I were rich I wouldn't own 4 vehicles, only one of which I'd call "mechnically sound".

Roomate and coworker, yes. The roomate drives a '06 Accord V6 coupe - not chump change - owns a house out in front royal, and is renting a room here... but I never thought to ask her "what, are you rich?"
Diff'rent strokes.

It's really all about perspective. I would say that 90% of us on this forum would be considered to be "rich" by the majority of the population, if for no other reason than our hobby. People think that playing with cars is expensive (and it is), but if you are willing to make other sacrifices, it really isn't that bad.
When I was working at Sheetz, I personally owned 5 vehicles at one time. Tell me that people didn't think I was doing something on the side.
The fact of the matter is, people are much quicker to judge you rather than considering your priorities or actually thinking about the situation.
I'd like to think that I live well, but I buy virtually everything second hand and at a deep discount compared to Joe Blow who paid top dollar and bought it from the store a year earlier.

In the eyes of the general public motorcycles are recreation. Why would you need several? People are caught in thinking that material things are an indication of how much money you have. But in actaulity it is money you had. Unless you are flipping bikes then this doesn't apply. Are you saving for a downpayment on a house, or saving for something in general?

In regards to rj's point it doesn't really matter whether motorcycles are an indication of money you CAN spend or DID spend. Eitherway (the thought process is) you had the surplus of money to have bought multiple motorcycles, which many people don't have, which equates to you being well off.
Honestly though my thoughts on this are similar to whoever (im lazy ) posted that people overestimate the cost of a motorcycle. Most people are very surprised that you can get a perfectly functioning motorcycle for so cheap (especially when you don't care if it is initially functioning as most of you all don't  ).
For example, at the point that I am at right now in life (senior in college) I could viably own multiple motorcycles solely supported by the bullshit job that I have here (or even the jobs I get over the summer in NoVA). If I were paying for school this would obviously be different, but a lot of people here don't pay as well, so I feel like my situation is somewhat common.

I think in your case what to look at is the ratio of functioning motorcycles / nonfunctioning motorcycles

Yeah, I AM 3 for 3 right now :-D
But the relevancy was that you paid for 2 running motorcycles of the 3 you own. The fact that it's now 1 running of the 3 (is it 3 owned to Phil officially?) isn't a function of the money spent or not spent. It's a function of... the handlebar nut.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I dunno, common folk are dumb and think most bikes cost a lot of money. Take it as a compliment and use it to attain females.
Now when I look at my buddy in NC who is my age, owns a new Ducati 749, a brand new Tahoe with 22" rims, and two townhouses or my other buddy who has a new modded R6, a fully-loaded 07 Tundra and a twin-engine Yamaha boat to go with his gigantic house... I think THOSE guys are rich
