A little more info on the BMW 1-Series

Yeah no LSD is definitely a bean counter thing. Still kind of stupid though considering that plenty of other RWD performance-oriented cars have one. BMW is obviously targeting enthusiasts with this car. But then again, how many people who would have bought this car, now will not buy the car because it doesn't have a limited slip? Probably not a whole lot. It'll still be a mega hit for them.

If Mazda had stuck with a boosted platform like the RX-7, the tables would probably be turned on the Mazdaspeed. I bet the Mazdaspeeds are leaving the lots a lot faster than the RX-8 right now.
Eh, Mazda had enough trouble with the reliability of the Renesis engine as is. Had it been turbocharged it is pretty likely that it would have been an unmitigated disaster.
Yep. Why wouldn't they put an engine that was as well engineered and power-ready as the one in the Mazdaspeed into the RX-8? That car looks fantastic in my opinion, but I would never purchase one because of its engine reliability, lack of power, and poor gas mileage coupled with its lack of power. From what I've heard, it does everything else right.
Well its a unique part of their DNA so they figured they had to make another RX and of course RX = rotary.

Its ironic but they tried to take the same approach with their prototype car in American Le Mans LMP2 but their rotary in that car just didn't get it done and they ended up going back to a turbo 4 cylinder. Now if you listen to Mazda they will say that its because the rotary was saddled with an uncompetitive rule set, which may be true. But Racecar Engineering had an article about them that was saying that Mazda was using several different race engine tuners to develop their engine. They'd let one tuner develop it for a few months, then they'd switch to another, then they'd switch to another, in the hopes that they could get a different perspective from all of their partners and that they could all get experience.

For my money that was probably a very bad idea and probably had a lot to do with why they failed. In almost all pro racing programs introducing instability will make it more difficult to succeed.

Correct! Well actually I think you could get it with the cold weather package on the e36's later on too. They seemed to have drawn a line in the sand between the M division and regular cars, and LSD's shall not cross!

I wish they would at least make it an option, but I'd say only 10% or less of their customers would pay extra for it.

Honestly I think it makes perfect sense. For a street car, even one you plan on driving quite spiritedly, I wouldn't pay a dime for a LSD. For the few times that I need both wheels to put down power in a low traction situation, I'm sure the electronic do-dad does just fine. It takes away from the trackability of the car, but I doubt BMW cares much if a bunch of gearheads want to buy the cars 5-10+ years later to use as track cars.

Honestly I think the only mistake is putting such a big motor in the 1 series. Then that just gives reason for people to be confused as to why it isn't available with an LSD. And it gets heavier and heavier, until everyone has everything they want, the 1 is as big as a 3, the 3 is a 5, the 5 is a 7, and the 7 is an airplane.

Over

and over

and over again.

It SHOULD have come over as a 120i, 120d, and 128i. Then we wouldn't be having dreams of it keeping up with an M3. Tongue I'm sick of this horsepower war crap.

MZR FTW.

Anyway, to be honest, this is a bit like what I'd hoped would happen. Have the M cars be real buzzy, fast, loud, and barebones street legal racekars, like an E30 M3 was, and use the 1/3/535 for the popped-collar douches who were the reason for an automatic in the E36 M3 and the retarded SMG in the E46 M3.

Looks like the 135i's price won't stop climbing. It's apparently going to hover just under 35K

Eh, I'd expect an optioned-out 135 to come in around $35k but the base model should be $29k-$31k. And that comes standard with the sport package. I'd guess that the 128 will start at $25-27k.

Of course the perennial problem with BMW's is that once you start adding options the price skyrockets. But even then I'd expect to get a 135i I could be happy with for around $33k or so. It may seem high but I don't think its high at all considering that a STi has similar power for around the same price.

Where do yall see any pricing for the 300hp one? All I saw in that article was for the 200hp version. Am I missing something?

:?:

from the article Wrote:Since we'll probably see none of the oil-burners here in the States, the one figure that stood out to us was £29,745. That's the price in pounds for the M-Sport equipped 135i.

Using some creative math, ┬ú29,745 is just under $60,000 U.S. at current exchange rates ÔÇô far from what we'll pay when the 135i makes its way across the pond. For comparison, the 335i in the U.K. comes in at ┬ú31,550, or about $63,500 in U.S. dollars (again, at today's exchange rate). So if the base 335i here in the United States comes in at $38,900, then would it be safe to assume that the 135i should be under $35k?

335i and 135i = 300hp

I'm really not that surprised by a price of $35k for the 135i. As briefly mentioned in the article the exchange rate is shit right now, and I'm sure they want to get as much money for the 135i as possible while still keeping it short of the 3 series price range.

Quote:BMW has announced formal base pricing for the 1-series at Los Angeles, removing all doubt. The 128i coupe, with a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower I6, starts at $29,375, while the 135i, with the twin-turbo, 300-horsepower six, clocks in at $35,600. This is being brought to you mere minutes after the announcement, and there is no official press release yet, so stay tuned and we'll keep you updated.

$30k for the base? Fuck that noise.

wtfuck?

Rumors were that the 128 was going to be around $26-27k. That's a bit more than I was expecting.

Maybe the 135 comes with an iphone, wii, large pizza, hooker, and a trunk full of fireworks. I think that would be reasonable

oh well. I really started liking this car a lot, too. Sad
The consensus on the 1series fanboi sites was predicting 35-36k for the 135 so this isnt too much of a surprise

that hyundai looks a lot better now Sad (dont tell goodspeed!)

Wow, that is dumb. I'm sure it'll sell but at that price it ain't no bargain. But in a few years when used ones start showing up it'll be quite nice.

So much for the BMW Civic :?
