my .02.
The 89+ does look a lot better, between the spoiler and front end, but that is really the only big difference from what I can remember. They are much better in terms of swapping in different engines, but I also recall that they are a bit heavier as well (typical Toyota, Nissan of adding pounds every year through a model's life cycle).
I totally feel you on the red interior as well, gag me please. One thing to consider, even though it might be a bit of work, would be to buy the older one that runs perfectly and then get a BHG 89+ NA for $300, swap over the body panels and interior trim and have a spare engine.
As for the size issue of the mk3. Take it from me, you FEEL how big the mk3 is. It's a boat and you'll know it. As a first car and not being used as a sports car, this isn't that big of a deal. The extra pounds will be obvious and a bit of a hindrance the more you get into autoX and track events, but it may serve as a reference point when you get another car. The SC, if anything like a mk4, is a bit of a porker, but does a really good job of hiding it and it also handles much better (as well as having a lot more aftermarket suspension and brake options).
As a disclaimer, I'm not pushing you toward any car. Get whatever suits you, I just want you to be aware before you buy. MK3 = awesome boulevard pimpin and cruiser, but is too bloated and doesn't have adequate braking or suspension qualities to be a sports car, without extensive work and $$.

I was just thinking exactly that. If I were to get a pre '89 car, it wouldn't be hard when I'm out of college to sort the car out to my tastes in terms of interior and exterior aesthetics. Of course, if I can find an 89 up car I'd rather "get it done" in the first place so to speak.

or you could do it in college in your parking lot

Well, updates.
I found a car in TN, a lower mileage almost stock '89 with an airbag steering wheel and the gray leather interior for $4500 dollars. Metal head gasket, minor issues, nice car. Its just about the best find I've found in the months I've now been looking and I've been in contact with the owner for over a week. He lives in the Nashville area and his FS ad on the Supra forums said he's willing to drive to meet people, but halfway from the 'burg to him is apparently too far, fair enough.
I underestimated how hard it would be to find not only an '89 up car in good condition, but any reasonable MK3 on the eastern seaboard. The simple answer is anything without an airbag just won't do. So I've grown quite tired of searching and am now leaning towards buying anything with wheels that runs and has seats. I almost want a beater car that I don't really care about/have to worry about. I've been looking again at 240's and SC's and Volvo 850/S70's which have caught my recent attention. My brother's roommate in college had an 850 wagon and it was about the best damn "college" car I've ever been in.
So yeah...keep your eye out for....whatever.
that makes me happy.

Just have him send you tons of pictures and go out there and get it if it's the car you want. Hell, RJ went to California for his race car! (Granted, he's not normal).

that would be really funny if you got a mk3 from TN, that's where I got mine from :-). It is a long drive, though. What kind of issues does it have? Is he flexible on the price?
P.S. I have to remind you that I have a 240 that I can sell you. 30 mpg, unlimited potential, probably sell later for the same $$...

I noticed that car in my search, that would be very interesting to check out.
All is not lost on the MK3 front, the guy said the drive might be too far for him. But I have his cell number, and if I call him in a couple of days with cash in hand he might be tempted to give in, who knows. If I am able to get down there and he is up for it then its a done deal. The car has an airbag steering wheel installed from a later MK3 and the horn/turn signals don't work/not hooked up. I don't know how he DD's it without turn signals. I found another much closer to the burg, a 90 model and then there is DJ's friend's car as well.
Dave, got any pics/price for the 240?
Arm out the window probably. I would keep looking. Nashville is a hull.

For the .01% of the time I am driving at an AutoX a small slow RWD car would be better than an SHO. For the other 99.9% of the time (commuting, driving in bad weather, taking trips with friends, etc...) I enjoy a larger more powerful car.
Andrew is just bitter that his diff pin ventilated his SHOs transmission. My trans has 164k miles on the original internals 8) .

We're glad you like your SHO but its still an ugly, boxy taurus and no reason to shit up a "WTB Supra" thread with it.
