cool - once I get high enough to make an alliance i'll invite you guys....but when I said "slow" strategy game I meant it - it's going to start slow. I think it picks up pretty good later on..but basically it looks like a month commitment to get to the point it moves at a good pace

What increases the cap on the population?

I am pretty sure there is no cap on population - as long as you have the crops to support it. On server 2 I have another account - and the leader has like 28,000 troops. And yes, your supporting population automatically goes up as you have resources/buildings. That number in the top right hand corner that is a fraction shows you how much crops you're using versus how much you're making. You will die if you end up getting a negative number for crop production - so don't let that happen. Also - don't build any buildings until you have a lot of resources coming in - it's better to spread out your resources too instead of loading up in one..the ratio should be something like 10:12:8:6


And..yeah, fast strategy is actually my preferred type of game - I played the shit out of Age of Empires, and was pretty much unstoppable on MSN Gaming zone. But I can't very well install a game like that here at work, so this is just something to pass some time. You don't have to 'play' it non-stop like you do a real time strategy game...but it still requires a lot of thought.

So I came across this - which confirms my guess that at the higher levels, this game will take quite a bit of time to play.

Oh god no, not Travian. I got sort-of-high-end in that game, with over 2k population, and the game just got to be too much. Way more hardcore than WoW to be even in the top 500 on that server. Sleeping is literally a deterrent to advancing at that level, and at a certain point it is absolutely required that you have someone else play your stuff in order to advance. Looking back at all of the games I've been addicted to, I miss Travian the least.

noooo don't build any buildings to start, lol..you will kick yourself for that later, that's what i did..and it'll take you about 4 days to get straightened out

Resources - try to keep this ratio: 10 wood:12 clay:8 iron:6 crops

And it seems like the best strategy from what i've been reading is to try to level all your fields, mines, claypits, crops at about hte same level..in other words, it's better to have 4 clay pits at level 1 than one clay pit at level 4

i'd recommend checking out that forum - and some of the othe threads as well. They just wiped the forum clean a few days ago it seems to get rid of spammers and such, but still SOME good info there - and I imagine it will accumulate pretty quickly. It seems like about 150,000 people must play this game over all their servers. A lot of talk about server3 right now, since there are a few teams getting ready to complete the World Wonder, which will reset that server.
