Anyone into slow strategy games? - HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

This is a game sort of like a "slow" version of Age of Empires. 3 Civilizations to chose from...lots of emphasis on gathering resources and such, and then attacking. they just restarted server 4 last week, so almost everyone there is near the same level...basically build an army, an empire, make alliances, etc. First player/alliance to build a "wonder" forces a server reset - they win. It seems pretty addicting if you're into these types of games - just be prepared to be in it for the long haul.

If you want to join, go to quadrant 2 on server4 (server 2 is already too far along to join).

Just thought i'd pass it on - it's a time-waster, but not as bad as some others since you don't have to constantly be monitoring it yet. It's all web-based too, so no need to install anything at work.

Also - the only reason I mention it's slow is because it takes time to build the buildings or do any of the upgrades - like 30 minutes to an hour, for some of the buildings, and you can only do one at a time, unless you pay gold/real money to have them finished instantly.

How are you still employed?

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

A perk of being awesome, I suppose.

- .RJ - 05-10-2007

At my first job I had nothing to do but surf the interwebs all day... I hated it.

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

Yeah, it pretty much blows, actually. I have gotten quite a bit of self-paced training done, taken some classes, studied up on java til I'm blue in the face..and still have 5 hours a day to screw off. My only REAL job requirement is to answer the phone when it rings, and be available for a meeting...I'm batting 1000 in that department.

- .RJ - 05-10-2007

Meetings... ugh. I think preparing for, and going to meetings here occupies about 30% of my time.

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

Yeah, I do a security/safety briefing for all the new people here every other week, just to have something to do. And we have a staff meeting which I don't participate in once a month, because I'm not cleared yet.

I was just reading some study that said something like 75% of the time spent in meetings is not productive...I can believe that.

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

Oh - the other cool thing I'm doing is learning Arabic. It's not as hard as you might think at first.

- mrbaggio - 05-10-2007

Is that url correct? I got a domain squater type of site.

You should schedule a meeting to talk about it.

interestingly enough, someone already did that, i think it was today - I purposefully didn't go to it.

i fixed that domain name - i had two letters transposed..should work now

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

I'd kind of like to have a meeting about how the company would be soooooo far ahead if they started this process like the summer before graduation for people they plan on hiring out of college. They'd save a ton of money, and wouldnt have people screwing off for the first 1000 hours they work

- BLINGMW - 05-10-2007

I'm into the civ series, was pretty happy with Civ3, have Civ4 now and I'm not sure if I like it, but I'm still getting used to it. I'm a bit impatient to play REALLY slow, big games, so I usually play small Civ worlds and turn on options to make the game go faster. Accelerated production and such. Once my empire gets too big, and there's like one other guy, it's no fun.

Hadn't heard of this thing you linked, sounds interesting.... Playing against real people could be a plus.

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

Yeah..if you check out the stats for server3, which has about the same number of people on it..almost 18,000 are active. There's a pretty good "wonder race" going on - the leader has like 74% completion..which is why it's not a good idea to join that server..it's too late. I made an account on server2 first just for kicks - and it's about the same size as well, and has had over half a million troop casualties in 18,000 battles today..haha...it's a good idea to get on server4 now, since it just got rest. I have a few other people that have joined, i'm at -134, 74 if you guys want to join in that same quadrant..will pay off later having friends to make an alliance with..it's the only way to win, from what i've been reading

Won't happen w/ the current situation. While you sit in the tank LM and the Govt split your salary. This 'encourages' the govt to get your clearance done b/c they are paying for you 50%. If you are still in school and are not in 'need' of the clearance they don't care and you goto the bottom of the pile. Stupid yes, but welcome to the wonderful world of govt contracting. It doesn't get any better.

Exactly why I'm learning Arabic..if it doesnt, fuck it, I'll go work for the government, or at least move around within the company.

hal tesstatiya aan tikra hatha? jinnstoo oktika.

Are you working with MSA or dialects?

-T

PS: Mistakes in that transliteration aren't mine.

- ScottyB - 05-10-2007

bargon wanchi kox paa Solo? ho ho ho ho.

- HAULN-SS - 05-10-2007

that's either incorrect or way above my level..the only thing i recognize is "hatha" for "what"

i've only been at this a couple weeks

And MSA is the most useful for waht I'd want. going to learnt hat first, then decide if I need a dialect
