S2000 "Type-R"
#1
About a month ago a rumor came up from Japan that Honda had revived plans for a S2000 Type-R. Apparently the idea had been floating around in Honda a couple of years ago and was shelved for some reason.

Well its been unshelved and will be hitting the showroom floor in the fall. Its supposed to be call the S2000 Club Racer. Here's to hoping it'll be a grand last hurrah for the st00k. I imagine it'll be kinda pricey so it'd better be fast.

And here it is:

Kinda disappointed that there isn't more power but just about everything else is just what the doctor ordered. Stiffer chassis, stiffer suspension, better aero, and lighter. Don't know how one would mount a roll bar in there though :?

The wing and lip are a bit ricey but if its priced right and performs well I'm sure it can be overlooked.

Seems out of place to me. I mean, the R has always been a good step above whatever is just below it, in power as well, but this seems mostly cosmetic. So it's 90 lbs lighter with better aero? I'm sure this leads to slightly better lap times, but would be undetectable on the street. Seems like a bastardization of "R" to me. Should have been a "special edition" or type S or some crap.

It isn't a Type R, it's a CR (club racer I think). I'm not impressed. Ricey looking, no more power, and doesn't go to 9K? No thanks. Then again, the S2000 doesn't really need more power (maybe a bit more torque?); driven at the limit it's ridiculously perfect.

I think what I would've really liked to see is a true S2000 coupe like what BMW did with the Z4. Then they could've created a true Type-R from that.

With this car I suppose its not bad except I would've liked to see more power. The suspension, weight reduction, and aero are some good improvements just as long as the cost premium isn't too high.

The problem with this car though is that Honda presumably didn't want to tackle the extra cost of making a true S2000 coupe (Type-R or otherwise) so they decided to do something that covers half the distance. Unfortunately I think this will not be super compelling for a lot of potential buyers and the car may not sell as well as they'd hoped. Then they'll look at the results and say, "See, people don't want hardcore cars from us." When the real answer is "People don't want half-assed hardcore cars from us."

In a way I think that's what happened with the EP3 Si. It failed because it was slow, overweight, homely, and expensive, not because it was a hatchback. If it had 200 hp (w/LSD) and looked better it would have done a lot better than what it did.

I don't know why they haven't. The Z4 Coupe (and M Coupe) is selling very well...it seems like a No-Brainer for Honda to make an S2000 Coupe.

Hell, make the Type-R the only Coupe available, they'll sell every one they make.

hmmm... interesting idea, I'd like to see that as well. I wonder if they could make it look right? It certainly would make more sense to make a permanent hardtop car if you're trying to sell it as a potential track car.

This is true, but that thing looks like a park bench wing you would buy at AutoZone! I mean look at that fuckin thing! It spoils the good looks of that car imo.

I actually like the wing. :dunno: The front is pretty horrible from most angles though.
