great drives that stay with you
#1
ever have one of those times where you're either driving, or riding with someone and the road (or track), car, and place come together and it just hits you somewhere really deep? i'd like to hear about your really memorable/profound drives and why they stayed with you.

for me, i went out one night when i was interning over the summer of 04 in Spartanburg, SC and was living alone for a few month. my living conditions were bare bones -- i literally lived in my living room, which was filled with a cot, a table with my computer on it, and a lawn chair -- so i often went on drives after dinner to cool off and get out of the confines of home/office. it was pretty much just me and my car down there so i spent alot of time in it that summer and had some pretty cool adventures.

i picked a different route this time and after being herded through the remnants of the day's rush hour, peeled off through some neighborhoods and finally got onto a road that would take me through a small state park area. before i knew it the road was climbing steeply and the double yellow line started flowing into long curves. with the windows down it was a perfect june night, the crickets and locusts buzzing along with my engine. it was getting dark but the sky was still in the throes of an awesome tropical looking sunset which was painting wild blurs of citrus color across the hood of my accord. before i knew it, i was knocking the shifter down to 3rd, then 2nd and bending the car hard into some hard 90 degree turns. everything was flowing so smooth, the sounds of the car bouncing off the sides of the hills. it wasn't long before i got to the summit and it was spectacular. the whole city below was hazing over with evening moisture and the red sunset was bouncing off of it. it was so quiet up there....nothing but the car idling and the wildlife. i remember looking over the city, and thinking about nothing at all except that i hoped it would stay light just a little longer. life just kind of took a hiatus for 15 minutes. even though i felt pretty isolated and alone i was actually thankful that i could have that moment to myself.

after i sat up there for a while i drove home, threading the curves and dreading the traffic as i got closer to home. from that night on i went to this summit all the time, until i left 2 months later. if i ever go through there and have time i'm going to go back. my drives there also led to this story: http://www.mmsports.org/forum/viewtopic ... light=vmax

i also had some great drives on 33W and the Blue Ridge parkway but that's another story. i also wish i had some track stories but unfortunately i haven't had any track time yet.

i've had several drives that i can definitely remember, some alone, some with others, but all great. I'll see if i can find a creative way to describe them later.

Maengelito Wrote:hana highway in maui,

Wife and I did that in a mustang. I was going to post some pics but I don't have them online, maybe later. Next time I'm getting a JEEP!

My most fun drive recently was following pete up to WGI from Carlisle. Man, I sure do feel sorry for those highway workers who had to pickup those cones/barrels. Maybe I should upload that to youtube....

Centreville, VA to Savannah, GA

In a 2007 Suburban with 4 friends that wasn't mine and had all the creature comforts you could ask for. Weather was crappy going down, but fine coming back up. We watched the Family Guy 4th Season, Nacho Libre, Miami Vice, Roast of Pam Anderson, Mr & Mrs Smith, and others.

Las Vegas, NV to Denver, CO

Everything I saw was new, and was interesting to see the climates and landscapes change as we drove east and the differences in elevation. Great trip, and took about 5 days so we weren't rushed. Bad thing was that I was with my family.

The first HizzyFest at Beaverun! Gerald was in group three... it was my first weekend working tech full time. Things were much more lax back then... so I got to jump in his car for a ride along in the old red gsr!

we come down the front straight... and he take the car to threshold braking... I knew this is where i need to be.

Ever since... every ride i take with someone on track... i try to figure out how to fix the busted pile with little to no money and get it back on track for my free track time.

Gerald gave me my first hit of the go fast crack pipe and i've had issues ever since. Thank you Gerald!

The road I live off of back home follows a railroad track for about 3 miles, and then you turn and go under a stone archway to get to my house, and the train train goes overhead. The road is a pretty twisty road, and I think the train speed limit is 50mph, road is 45mph. My favorite driving ever is occaisionally I'll be coming home and night, and the train will storm around a bend in the track at full speed right as I am going onto that road - I love to race the train to the arch, and see if I can drive under the arch before the train goes overhead...maybe that's dumb, but its one thing I loved about living there.

Last year several of us rode down to Dayton one night to check out the rumored car scene down there, the weather was perfect, Adam ran over a rabbit, Ryan F's FB RX7 sounded awesome, and there was some mild three honks from a roll tomfoolery. All in all a simple, but hugely fun night that I don't think I'll ever forget

Also the 33W cruise we all took when we met up at Rockingham last April. We really need to do that again. Biker burnouts, DJ's ungodly loud open WG, the Jetta's simmering brakes. That was also a perfect day

I think my most memorable drive was from Denver to my home town Abingdon after my senior year of high school. We were driving my older brothers Supra turbo and my twin brothers SS Camaro back to VA. There were 4 of us, we only stopped for gas, one night of sleep, and a 3 hour layover in bumfuck kansas to get a flat fixed. Trip wore all 4 of us out but it was an awesome time.

Ok, my ride with Kaan is def a close 2nd. My first ever autocross, first ever ride along....with Kaan....in the CRX monster. We're flying around the course and he is dogging it down the back little straightaway and turns the wheel hard to the rigth for the next turn and the next thing I hear is "Fuck were not turning!!!!". So we proceed to throw up smoke and gravel and screeching tires as we fly WAY the fuck off course and end up with the caution tape surrounding the course across the windshield of the CRX and both of us with damn big smiles on our faces. Kaan, you are partly responsible for my addiction to auto-x.
