Baaaaack frooom the deaaaaad...with engine specs!

So. M3 V8. Yippie skippy. How much power?

420 horsepowers. (Ok, metric horsepowers)

At 8300 rpm.

I'll give you a second so you can read that again.

420 horsepower. 8300 rpm.

Torque? 288 lb-feet. But check out this torque curve:

Holy crapmonkeys! Not so much a torque "curve" as a torque, you know, line or something. There's also some garbage in there about using regenerative braking to charge the battery, which is cool, I guess. Sounds heavy. But speaking of heavy...here's the best part: You know that really bangin's sweet S54 that powers the E46 M3 and the Z4 M Coupe and stuff? This V8 is...lighter. I know, I just blew your mind. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that.

Wow, you know, I'll probably never own one but it's still frickin' cool.

Regenerative braking means no alternator? That's kinda neat.

Man that dyno sheet is ridiculous.

I still see an alternator, though. Sad But you're right, it's still kind of cool.

There's an alternator... its hanging off the lower right side of the engine. If you ever worked on your own car you'd know what it looks like Wink

Hold on... is this thing dry sump? I think i spy a belt driven oil pump...

I didn't even look at the picture of the engine.

I changed the alternator on the ninefourfour at VIR in 95┬░ weather instead of eating lunch last year. True story.

No dry sump:

But next best thing, I guess! Two oil pumps, full spec flow up to 1.4g's.

92mm bore, 72mm stroke. Crazy, crazy engine.

Eeeeeeeeenteresting.... looks like kinda like a drysump but, the extra tank is just where a normal earl pan would be. BMW did their homework here, pretty trick Smile

My guess is that for a racing motor, there's probably a dry sump part number. Take of old pan, bolt on new pan, done. Was probably designed with a dry sump in mind, and then just "converted" to a "standard" wet.

I am also surprised to not see direct injection on this motor. Odd, don't you think?

same here. perhaps the combustion chambers have a particular shape that's not condusive to DI, or maybe there isn't enough space due to valve size? i dunno.

Why 2 pumps pulling from one pan with only 1 exit path to the motor? Super hardcore high pump fed by another pump?

One of the Articles I linked Wrote:Consistent and reliable oil supply even under extremely dynamic driving conditions

Two volume-flow controlled pendulum slide cell pumps supply the eight-cylinder efficiently with lubricant, consistently delivering exactly the right amount for the engine. Wet sump lubrication optimised for engine dynamics, in turn, ensures appropriate lubrication also in extreme braking manoeuvres. The entire system features two oil sumps ÔÇô a small one in front of the front axle subframe and a larger sump further back. A separate reflow pump, in turn, extracts oil from the front oil sump and pumps it to the sump at the rear.

420hp but only 288 ft lbs at the flywheel? That almost sounds like a turbocharged lower-displacement engine. It will definitely be more of a top end RPM range performer as opposed to the new domestics that will be coming out that will have torque all across the RPM spectrum.

In MIHS terms: Dat shiT ain't gunna win no r0ll racez dawgZ!!!!

Did you see the torque curve? It's pretty much at peak from 3500rpm up to 6500rpm. I'm not sure what the curve looks likes on the "new domestics" but that's pretty impressive.

This is kind of ghetto, but it gives the same idea for a stock C6:

That's what the torque curve for an NA V8 should look like imo. Also, with that much displacement, peak torque and hp numbers should be pretty close to each other.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the ingenuity nor the innovation of that motor, but I am trying to say that that torque curve is not all that impressive to me *for a V8*

Lee, you know that torque is pretty closely related to displacement for NA engines, right? And this V8 is only 4.0L compared to the Z06 6.0L... hardly a fair comparison to say the BMW V8 is lacking torque. Apples to Oranges...

I'd also like to point out that those are not the power numbers for the new generation of Corvette's that are coming out, which will be much more impressive. I'm not even going to count the Blue Devil because that will be a blown LS. Just the base C6s are rumored to have anywhere from 425hp to 450hp.
