2010 VW GTI - White One!
Has a dent and I'm already 2k over KBB. Logic fail, but I was expecting much less so I'm okay with making a fast sale as opposed to getting every dollar.

I was shocked too. I just negotiated a price with my brother for his (2010 DSG, 35k miles, APR stage 2, extra set of wheels, pretty much same options as yours minus the HID's) for about 15K. Was initially a little annoyed about it until I saw what they are going for. Oh, and it has a 3.5 years left of an extended warranty left that's transferrable. I stopped complaining lol.

I think it's gone about two years without any sort of problem. That's decent for any car, no?

Not really. IMO, it should be 4-5 years.

7 years / 121k miles on the Corolla with nothing but basic maintenance, with the sole exception of a piece of plastic trim flying off the roof. My wife bought an extended warranty which got used exactly 0 times.

3 / 51k for the Mustang with nothing but oil changes and new tires.

5 years / 105k? miles for the Grand Prix before the fuel pump or some sensor started causing it to stall at random, with one fix under warranty right after I bought it (for a faulty steering column joint that caused a grittiness while turning.) Then again, it was a rental car for 30k miles and in a severe wreck prior to me buying it.

My VW... was in the dealership for a leaking transmission, airbag warning light, dashboard rattle, random stalling condition when idling and an occasional no start condition, all before 15k miles.

:dunno:

Sounds like you got a good set of cars, lucky guy!

I look those vehicle initial quality and dependability ratings and they're measured in "problems per 100 vehicles." Most manufacturers have a score over 100 so I just assumed most cars have issues and every year. Confusedhrug:

VDS uses three year old cars:

IQS uses new cars:

My car is even older than the VDS ones so yeah, I'd expect some more issues. There's also the fact that I have a warranty so I'm going to claim every minute little issue with the car and have them fix it.

It's the number of issues in the first year of ownership. What's invalid about that?

Meanwhile, my mom's 2011 Outback has the build quality of a straw hut.

Actually, scratch that, a straw hut wouldn't squeak and rattle as much.

The problem is that it's not just studying mechanical defects - it also looks at design defects which are subjective per the driver. Someone who can't figure out how to use Fords sync system is ranked in the same bucket as a major transmission or engine failure.

The other problem I think is reporting. Why are Cadillac and Buick so much higher ranked in vds than Chevrolet, but for sure using a lot of the same components? Is that a conspiracy to steer me away from the Chevy but into the Buick?
