Nice work!
Not sure why you had to compress the tensioner? There is this tensioner, which can be removed from the head: ![]() LOL'd at the prayer commentary  but hey, any sort of good vibes are helpful throughout a project like this. Based on the first photo you posted of the timing chain and two guides, it looks fine and I don't think you broke anything. They should flop around a bit (at least the taller of the two should) so don't worry about that. Just keep all mallets/hammers far, far away. Re: SAP delete. Take a small piece of sheet metal (aluminum is easiest to work with) and remove the EGR (#4 below) from where it attaches to the headers. It's a two-piece part and you can cut the aluminum to fit between the two pieces, then bolt it back together (#5): ![]() Then you should have someone tell the ECU to stop looking for the EGR/SAP stuff. If you're up my way, I have a friend who can do it for cheap. If you don't want to cut metal (or don't have metal to cut) I would guess there are EGR delete "block off" plates that you can buy for a few dollars.

Awesome job! I am very proud of you guys for getting all this work done!
I guess I forgot to tell you to take out the main tensioner. That's usually one of my first steps. You will definitely want that out for the install.

After pulling the head off is when i realized that tensioner could have been removed. Felt real smart when i saw that. I'll see if I can find some metal for the SAP delete. Definitely learning a lot on this job. I'm lowkey enjoying it. This is way better than the clutch!

I have some headers that I welded the SAP shut. 2 of the studs are broken out of 6 that bolt to the mid-pipe but you can have them for free.

If my HG let go right after I did my clutch, I'd just about lose it.
It's great to see the progress, and props for tackling it all!

Nice job man . I don't know how daring I'd be to attempt this unless I had a backup car. Glad to see it is all off. Just don't forget one bolt when putting it all back together . Looks like you have a lot labeled which is good
05-30-2015, 03:57 PM
I bumped his game into expert mode. Each night I let the kids take five bolts out and put them in different bags, or they can opt to rearrange 2 labels.
05-31-2015, 01:19 AM
I didn't label wires or hoses.
I'm just gonna let statement stand on it's own.

Well I broke it so woopty doo.
Start 1: ran it for only 10 seconds or so, open headers. Just wanted to see where I was before putting on the full exhaust. All seemed fine. Start 2, we got the exhaust on. I can now tell that its running very choppy. There is smoke coming out the tailpipe and mid pipe - header connection. Need to tighten. The headers are also smoking, understandable, burning off oil from hands and probably small exhaust leak. After a while the idle seems to smooth out (but it is not smooth, just less choppy) and it made an intermittent squealing noise that was not the belt. It didn't come from the belts and it simply just wasn't belt noise I don't think. It was a fade in/fade out squeal. Came from under the valve cover. It happened about 3 times and I gave the car is slight rev to 1500 Rpms and I got the squeal again. The sound passed on its own and only lasted for like 4 secs. Then I decided to flip the lights so I can see and the car shuts down for like .7 secs and jumps back to life. There is also a weird smell inside the car coming from the AC vents, its all the smoke getting inside. Start 3, the squealing noise hasn't come back, however the idle is rougher than it was, the car is a little warmer nw and the noises from inside the valve cover are more prominent. From rubbing noises, to clicking and ticking noises, to what I could almost describe as rubbing two high friction surfaces against each other. It was a steady sound that came and went. Then I sat in the car for probably 20 seconds and it started to sound like s truck and shake so I shut it off and went home. I don't know anything about this stuff. I cannot diagnose any issues. I don't have time to go read tonight. I am completely lost and exhausted, getting to this point has been a total pain in the ass and rewarding in no way whatsoever. And I probably just fucked up the whole thing.

Sorry to hear that, man. Hopefully it'll be something simple and one of the alums can tell you what it is. If not, you should still be proud you made it this far.

*insertusernamehere* Wrote:Well I broke it so woopty doo. Most the smoke and smell is probably just shit burning off. It shouldn't be running choppy though after about 20 seconds. Sounds like the timing may be off a tooth. Pull the valve cover and check timing, A LOT of people get it wrong. Don't worry, it is a learning experience, not the end of your life.

Yeah, my car smoked from everywhere for quite a while. Headers, head, exhaust, etc. It's just got shit literally everywhere that needs to burn off.
As for the running rough, I'm with DJ - check timing.
